Former Writer of Canceled "Lizzie McGuire" Revival Reveals What Was Supposed to Happen

We were robbed of what could have been the greatest television show of all time. We all loved the Lizzie McGuire show when we were young (and still do sometimes, when we're hungover or sick in bed), but it turns out that we were so close to the revival we were craving.

The writer of the canceled Lizzie McGuire revival took to TikTok to discuss the show in detail.

The original Lizzie McGuire ran from 2001 to 2004, and The Lizzie McGuire Movie was released in 2003 and was set in Rome, Italy. Both featured Hilary Duff as the iconic blonde.

And in 2019, a revival series was announced.

Original cast members Adam Ramberg, Harry Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas were all confirmed to be returning, as was show creator Terry Minksy.

However, in January 2020, after two episodes had been filmed, Terry stepped down from his role as showrunner, citing differences in creativity and his overall vision for "Lizzie". Filming was halted.

Duff then urged Disney+ to move the series to Hulu so that she could approach the story more maturely.

She wrote on her Instagram account, "I was incredibly excited to launch Lizzie on D+ and my passion will never change. But I feel a great responsibility to honor the relationship between my fans and Lizzie, and it would be disrespectful to everyone to limit the reality of my 30-year-old journey to living under the ceiling of a PG rating. Just as her experience navigating life as a pre-teen/teenager was authentic, it is important that her next chapter be equally real and relatable. If Disney is interested, it would be a dream come true to have the show moved to Hulu and bring this beloved character to life again."

Later, in March 2020, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that the new script had flirtation and intimacy at the heart of the plot and that Disney+ was not happy with it.

Production remained suspended until December 2020, when Duff confirmed that the revival series had been canceled, breaking hearts worldwide.

Again, she shared the news privately with fans on Instagram, writing, "I am so honored to have the character Lizzie in my life. She has had a lasting impact on so many people, including me. To this day, it means so much to me to witness the loyalty and affection fans have for her. I know there are efforts and discussions going on all over the place to make the reboot a success, but sadly, despite everyone's best efforts, it just won't happen. I want the reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to what Lizzie is today. Because that is what this character deserves. We can all have a moment to mourn the wonderful woman she would have been and the adventures we would have had with her. I am very sad, but I promise everyone did their best. No, no, this is what the 2020s will look like."

And that was it.

Now, Jonathan Hurwitz, one of the writers of the cancelled show, has revealed details of the show's story on TikTok.

He revealed that Lizzie would have worked in New York as an interior designer. She was dating a hot chef who, it would be revealed, was having an affair with her best friend (please tell me it wasn't Miranda).

Lizzie then returned to California and this part was actually filmed at her former home. The cartoon Lizzie was waiting there, which is too cute.

She reunites with Gordo and learns that he is engaged and that his fiancée is pregnant. Perhaps this means they did not intend for this to be the endgame, but I have a feeling some reveals were on the way.

She then receives a message from Ethan and goes to see him. The next episode begins with her waking up in Ethan's bed wearing Ethan's T-shirt. She pulls out her "To Do" list and checks Ethan's name twice.

Hurwitz thinks that last part is the nail in the coffin of the program.

But this is an incredible story. I hope Netflix or HBO takes over.

Duff is pregnant with her fourth baby, so it may be a while before she's ready to shoot, but I have a feeling this won't be the last we hear of Lizzie McGuire.
