Morrissey Slams Sinéad O'Connor's Music Industry Tribute: "When She Was Alive, You Didn't Have the Courage to Support Her

This week, Sinead O'Connor passed away at the age of 56.

Since the news broke, tributes have poured in from friends and fans, including many in the entertainment industry who knew her or worked with her in some capacity.

However, Morrissey (a British rock star who regularly expresses extremely controversial views, including support for far-right politics) has condemned many of these tributes as hypocritical.

In a post on his website, the musician blasted music industry executives in particular, claiming that they shunned O'Connor in her lifetime and are now praising her.

"She only had 'self' to give," Morrissey began, "and after selling seven million albums, she was removed from the label." [She did nothing wrong. She was proud and vulnerable. ...... And there is a hatred in the music industry (which I am well aware of) for singers who "don't fit in."

The singer continued. "The cruel playground that is fame is today overflowing with admiration for Sinead: ...... with the usual ridiculous labels of 'icon' and 'legend.' It is only because it is too late to praise her now. When she was alive and looking for you, you did not dare to support her. [Morrissey further complained about the terrible things said about O'Connor before her death and how what was said in general has changed since her passing.

"The media labels artists as pests for what they hide ...... And they are sad, fat, shocking, crazy ...... for their cineid Ah, but not today!" He wrote.

"She was a challenge and could not be framed. She was harassed just for being herself. She finally closed her eyes in search of a soul she could call her own.

O'Connor's family released the following statement on Wednesday:

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have asked for privacy at this very difficult time."

The family also released the following statement.
