Princess Kate and Prince William receive new Scottish royal titles

Prince William and Princess Kate have many royal titles. Some are widely known, others less so. To mark the coronation of Prince Charles and Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess attended a service of thanksgiving and dedication at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.

For the Scottish ceremony, the royal couple used the new Scottish title of "The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay." Rothesay is the principal town on the Isle of Bute in Scotland. The title of Duke of Rothesay is given to the heir to the throne, along with other Scottish titles such as Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Grand Steward of Scotland.

The wife of the heir is also called the Countess of Carrick, Baroness Renfrew, and Lady of the Isles. Kate and William would stick to the titles of Duke and Duchess. However, strictly speaking, these are all accurate ways to refer to William and Kate.

The history of the royal family and Scotland is complex, and there were quite a few people who did not welcome the royal family. Patrick Harvey, a member of the Scottish Green Party, called the service "an exercise in Game of Thrones-style cosplay."

He told an "Our Republic" rally before the Scottish Parliament: "It is fundamentally incompatible with the modern, democratic society we are trying to build here. I am aware that major incidents will cause chaos. But consider how a modern, democratic head of state would do his job in Scotland. There would be none of this pomp, ceremony, and formality."
