Despite Playing an Iconic Doll, Margot Robbie Admits She Didn't Have a Barbie as a Child

"Barbie," which we have been waiting for all summer, will finally be released this Friday. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike that began last week, actors were (catastrophically) banned from participating in the promotion. (The tour was (catastrophically) suspended due to the SAG-AFTRA strike that began last week, which prohibited actors from participating in the promotion.

Interestingly, according to People, Robbie "wasn't actually that much of a Barbie girl as a child" and does not recall owning a single doll: "When asked if she remembers playing with Barbie dolls while growing up in Australia, she said, "I can personally recall I didn't have any that I could personally remember. My sister had one and my cousin had one. I was playing with my cousin."

Instead, Robbie said, "I was more of a roll in the mud kind of girl. When she played with dolls, the Barbies she chose "were all weird," she said. I think they were all weird because they weren't well cared for."

Nevertheless, the film is a passion project for Robbie, and she is amazed that it came to fruition. "I'll never forget sitting down and reading the script after years of talking to [writer/director] Greta Gerwig, and there was a joke on the first page, and I thought, 'They're never going to let me make this movie,'" Robbie continued, referring to Barbie's parent company, Mattel. But they gave us permission!"

.

She said she may not have played with Barbie much as a child, but her respect for the doll deepened through the filming of the movie. When asked what inspired her most about the project, Robbie said, "The idea that I am enough. Barbie can be anything, but even if you are just going through life, you can conquer it. That's been very therapeutic."

She added, "It's been very therapeutic for me.
