Prince Harry freed from the shackles of royal family "mentality," friends

Prince Harry testified in London last week as part of a trial against the publishers of the Daily Mirror newspaper.

According to the Sunday Times, this made Prince Harry "the first senior royal to give evidence in court in over 130 years."

More than simply making history, this strategic move by Harry in his battle with the British tabloids shows how far he has moved away from the traditional ways of the royal family.

One former courtier told The Times, "It was terrifying for a member of the Royal Family to be cross-examined on the witness stand, but Harry thinks 'come at me.'"

Meanwhile, a friend of the Duke of Sussex said, "He has been freed from the shackles of that mentality. In Princess Meghan, he found someone who supported his stance and was encouraged by it. But in the larger scheme of things, he believes there are serious wrongs that need to be righted. It goes deeper than simply wanting his day in court.

The Duke has accused several tabloids of illegally gathering information about him through means such as phone hacking. The Duke also accuses these newspapers of making his young life significantly more difficult than it should have been.

"As a teenager and in my early twenties, I ended up feeling like I was at the mercy of the many headlines and stereotypes they wanted to put on me.

"It was always a downward spiral, with the tabloids trying to get me, a 'damaged' young man, to do something stupid that would make a good story and sell a lot of papers."

"In hindsight, such behavior on their part is utterly vile."
