The dress Princess Charlotte wore in her Father's Day photo had a deep history with the royal family

The dress Princess Charlotte wore with her father Prince William and brothers Prince George and Prince Louis in a recently released Father's Day photo is an old staple not only for Charlotte but for girls who have grown up in the royal family for over a decade, "People" reports.

The dress is "one of [Charlotte's] most commonly worn summer dresses" and was made by British children's clothing designer Rachel Riley, the magazine wrote. The "Blossom Button Front" daisy print dress, with short puff sleeves and a Peter Pan collar, was worn by Charlotte last month when she attended a coronation rehearsal prior to her coronation on May 6 at Westminster Abbey.

"Smart enough to go to the rehearsal at the abbey and casual enough to have fun with my brothers and dad in the woods at the same time," Riley told People.

"They're all so gorgeous, and it's such a fun picture!" Riley told People.

As Marie Claire reported Sunday, the photos subtly pay homage to the late Queen, with the foursome sitting on a bench given to the late Queen for her 90th birthday in 2016. The photo was taken earlier this year by photographer Millie Pilkington on the grounds of the Windsor Estate.

Charlotte has worn the cotton dress three times in public, and Riley said she has a special attachment to it because her own daughter also wears the style: "It's been a best seller since I designed it 25 years ago." Riley said. 'My daughter Rose, now 30 and working with Riley, wore the same dress when she was little. [Lady Louise Windsor, daughter of Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie, wore the dress at the late Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, and Ira Phillips, youngest daughter of Peter and Autumn Phillips wore the dress at last year's Platinum Jubilee.

"Classic clothes last a long time because they have a style that never goes out of style," says Riley.

"I love seeing classic clothes stand the test of time. What my daughter wore 25 years ago, Princess Charlotte wears now.
