Meghan Markle Hopes Coronation Decision Will Be "Seen as Unselfish" by King Charles

The verdict is in and Meghan Markle will not attend King Charles' coronation at Westminster Abbey in London on May 6. (Meghan will remain in California to celebrate her son Prince Archie's fourth birthday and will attend a birthday party in Montecito with her sister Princess Lilibet.

The King is said to be "saddened" and "disappointed" that Princess Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet will not be there, and he understands why. The Sun reports that Princess Meghan hopes that her decision to stay home will be seen as unselfish.

According to one source, "Meghan does not want any more rifts to develop between her and other members of the royal family," a source told GB News (via The Sun), adding, "She wants her children to have a grandfather, Charles, and especially another grandfather (Meghan's long-time estranged grandfather Thomas Markle). She wants the children to get to know their grandfather Charles, especially those who will never get to know their other grandfather, Thomas Markle, whom Meghan has long been estranged from. She wants the two to meet and hopes that her decision will be seen as unselfish because it was best to keep Her Majesty's attention on her."

Although not fully reconciled, apparently Harry and the King had a heart-to-heart and it was significant enough for Harry to agree to come to the ceremony. (He reportedly rushed home after attending the ceremony, planning to make it in time for Archie's birthday party that evening)

"At this point, it's getting very personal," a close friend told People.

"They may not have accomplished what they wanted, but at the end of the day, he's going out there to support his father."

Meghan and the King have had a good relationship in the past, with the King even walking her halfway down the aisle at her wedding to Harry in 2018. Of the coronation, a close friend told People, "Meghan wants to be there to support her father-in-law, but at the same time, the scrutiny she receives outweighs the support." There is always someone to challenge their reasoning, and who wants to put themselves in that position?"

A close friend told People.

Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith called Meghan's choice "an elegant solution," adding that Archie's birthday falls on the same day as the coronation, "giving Meghan a rational reason not to come." It would be quite significant if Harry did not attend his father's coronation, but given the circumstances, we are not surprised that Meghan is not going," a palace source told the magazine.

"He [Harry] will look back on it and think better of coming and doing his part and saying, 'I saw my father crowned,'" said a source close to the royal family.

"And he will tell his children about it."
