Both Prince William and Prince Harry were "lost souls" before meeting their wives, says royal writer.

Royal author Tom Quinn says that Prince William and Prince Harry, whose mother Princess Diana died in a Paris car accident in 1997, were "lost souls" before meeting the woman who would eventually become their wives. When Princess Diana died, Prince William was 15 and Prince Harry was 12, almost 13.

But after William met Kate Middleton in 2001 and Harry met Meghan Markle in 2016, the brothers found partners who gave them the support they needed, Quinn told the Mirror.

"In fact, strangely enough, I think the two boys, William and Harry, need partners in very similar ways," he said. Quinn, who described Princess Diana as "probably more modern and loving" than her former husband, Prince Charles, said, "So when their mother died, they were burdened with a terrible thing on top of the anxiety of being raised by paid staff. By the time they were adults, I think they both needed either a quiet, solid, secure, level-headed, strong woman like Kate, in William's case, or a woman like Megan, in Harry's case, who would grab them by the neck and say, 'This is the way to live.'"

Although they were obviously very different, "the end result was the same. By the time Harry and William were in their late teens, I think they had lost their souls."

William met Kate in 2001 when they were both freshmen at the University of St. Andrews; they became a couple in 2003, had a brief breakup in 2007, but were together for seven years until their engagement in 2010; they were married on April 29, 2011, and have been married since. Harry and Meghan met on a blind date in 2016, became engaged in 2017, and married on May 19, 2018.

In his memoir, Spare, Harry talks about "firm rules" for royal dating, and "the main rule was that you absolutely had to date a woman for three years before taking the plunge and getting married," Harry writes in the book. But after traveling to Africa with Meghan just a month or two into their relationship, Harry writes that he realized that "Meg seemed to be the shining exception to this rule. 'All the rules. I soon got to know her, and she got to know me. The real me. I thought it might seem thoughtless, illogical, but it's true: For the first time, in fact, I felt I was living in the truth." Harry and Meghan were married 22 months after they met, but William and Kate had been together for nearly 10 years before their marriage.
