Hugh Grant and Ashley Graham, Most Awkward Interview on the Oscars Red Carpet

There are exchanges that replay over and over in my head as the night goes on and I wish I had done that or that I had done that. Graham really did his best and handled Grant's non-response like a champ, but ...... Phew. Whew.

First:

AG: "What do you like best about coming to the Oscars?"

HG: "It's fascinating. All of humanity is here. It's Vanity Fair."

AG: "Oh, you mean Vanity Fair. Yes, that's where we are free and have a little fun."

Here's a quote from Refinery29 writer Kathryn Shinn explaining the story. Singh tweeted: "Hugh Grant and Ashley Graham's red carpet exchange about Vanity Fair (he was talking about the 1848 novel about a shallow society, she thought he was talking about the 2023 magazine after-party I thought he was) is my favorite #Oscars moment."

That moment alone, dear reader, would have been awkward enough. But no! There are worse things!

AG: "What are you most looking forward to seeing tonight?"

HG: "Watching?"

AG: "Yes, I am. Are you hoping for someone to win?

HG: "Um, no one in particular."

AG: "Okay, so what are you wearing tonight?"

HG: "A suit."

AG: "A suit? Who made that?

HG: "I can't remember. It's a tailor.

AG: "It's ok. I'll give a shout out to the tailor. Uh. How did you feel about being in The Glass Onion? I love thrillers. Do you enjoy filming something like that?"

HG: "Well, I'm barely in it; I'm only in it for about three seconds.

AG: "Yeah, still! But still! You came and had fun, didn't you?"

HG: "Uh, almost."

AG: "Okay. I get it. Thank you very much. Thank you so much. It was nice talking to you."

HG: "Yeah."

Well. Ladies and gentlemen, the ceremony is over. The most awkward moment of the night has already happened. Thank you, Hugh.
