Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's departure from Frogmore Cottage "feels like cruel punishment," friend says

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been notified that they have only a few more months to fully move out of Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

King Charles has reportedly "evicted" the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from their British base and offered them to Prince Andrew instead, following the release of Prince Harry's shocking memoir, Spare. What was revealed in the book seems to have driven Prince Charles "spitting mad."

But even for the Sussexes' friends and certain members of the royal family, the decision not only hurts the U.S.-based couple, but poses an additional threat to their security when they travel to the UK.

Because of its location on the grounds of Windsor Castle, Frogmore Cottage is covered by the Metropolitan Police Department's Royalty and Professional Protection Unit.

"If you were to see what was written and receive it, the kind of vitriol that is on the Internet, if you didn't know what I know, you would feel under constant threat," Neil Basu, former head of the British counterterrorism police, in November said. 'We had a team investigating it. Some people have been prosecuted for such threats."

By contrast, disgraced Prince Andreu, who has been offered Frogmore Cottage as a downgrade from his current residence, is covered by private security by the king himself, according to Scobie sources.

Security threats aside, friends of the Sussexes feel that the King's decision is unfair, given that Prince Charles and his wife have paid the Crown Estate an amount that should cover their rent "for the time being."

"It all feels like a final and cruel punishment," a friend of the Sussex couple told Scobie." It's like (the family) wants to cut them out of the picture for good."

"It's like they want to be out of the picture for good.

Apparently, at least two members of the royal family are equally "appalled" by the decision.

Besides, the house will be difficult for the Sussexes to leave, not only from a practical standpoint, but also emotionally.

"Harry and Meghan will have to move out by early summer," one source said. 'Initially they were told it would be a few weeks, but now they have at least until after the coronation.'

Another source said, "This is not something they rent at random for convenience. Every drawer is full, every closet is full and ...... It's a real family home."

The Sussexes lived full time in Frogmore during the months when they were still working as royalty and maintained the house as a base for their visits to England. They now live in Montecito, California, with their children Archie and Lili.
