Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, "smiling" but with "underlying tension" on their date the night of the Frogmore retreat.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were spotted on Tuesday enjoying a date at the San Vicente Bungalows, a private members-only club in LA, as news of their "eviction" from Frogmore Cottage began to circulate.

Photos taken that night by the paparazzi show the Duke and Duchess of Sussex smiling, but one body language expert believes they wanted to put on a brave face for the cameras.

"It's hard enough for your parents to redecorate your bedroom after you leave home for the first time. So an eviction notice is a sting, no matter how wealthy, famous, or mature you are," Judy James told the Mirror.

"Harry and Meghan's reaction here seems to be a deliberate projection of a nonverbal 'shrug,' or wide grin and laugh, in the face of the recent Frogmore news."

"But this looks very much like a performance. These smiles appear to be ritual excesses rather than smiles prompted by genuine happiness. Whereas Meghan's suggests that she is in a 'vulnerable' mode, that of Princess Harry is the flip side of tension."

James also observes that the Sussexes try to appear extra happy when in view of the camera.

"When Harry gets out of the car and faces the camera, his expression seems to change from one of alarm to one of beaming joy.

"He does this by jumping up and down and bringing the group together ...... suggesting his anxiety and desire to protect them as he leads them to the venue. [Honestly, as someone who clearly lacks a poker face, I can only marvel at the Sussexes' courageous actions.

The night of their date was the day before the widely reported news that King Charles had removed them from Frogmore.

The couple has taken up permanent residence in Southern California, but maintains Frogmore as a safe base for their return to England.
