Princess Diana's butler responds to Prince Harry calling her "butler" in "Spare
Prince Harry felt the need to make his side of the story known through his memoir, Spare.
While there are various reports of upsetting members of the royal family mentioned in the book, Princess Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell, also admitted that he was hurt by some of the content of Spare.
"There were other things that were intensely upsetting," Burrell told Marie Claire on behalf of Slingo (opens in new tab).
"I was really upset that he called me 'butler,' 'mama's butler.' Mama's butler was called Paul, Harry.
"He didn't know me as 'butler,' so why did he suddenly start calling me butler all of a sudden these days?" Suddenly I was being told by this petulant prince that my confession book said nothing of the sort, as if he had dismissed me as irrelevant.
Burrell published his memoir A Royal Duty in 2000 and The Way We Were: In Memory of Princess Diana in 2006.
"I have always had to be very positive about this and say, 'Harry, you are wrong. You are wrong because you have forgotten your duty, respect, and loyalty. Not only to your family, but to our country and our people,'" Burrell asserts.
"I don't think the people of our country like that very much. The monarchy and the royal family live a very privileged life, very privileged to have everything at their disposal. The price they pay for that is public service. In Harry's case, it's like it's over; the public service is over and he has gone from royalty to celebrity."
When Harry and his wife Meghan Markle left their role as senior royals, they also abandoned their charitable patronage. Nevertheless, they have devoted their energies to many worthy causes during their time in California, from vaccine equality to paid family leave.
