Selena Gomez was widely reported to be dating The Chainsmokers' Drew Taggart this week, but the Rare Beauty founder has since denied any new relationship.

On Thursday, the star posted an Instagram Story, which he deleted shortly thereafter. It is unclear whether the photo was taken by Gomez herself or someone she knows, but the caption seems to imply otherwise.

Singer captioned the photo "I LIKE BEING ALONE TOO MUCH" and added the hashtag #iamsingle below.

Essentially, Gomez wants you to know that Taggart and Taggart are not an item and are probably just friends (they went bowling this week, but a source told People they were with a "group").

One witness told Page Six that Gomez and Taggart were "flirting," but it's only natural (I love that word) to take the singer's word against that of anonymous sources who spoke to the tabloid.

People will have their theories as to why Gomez chose to delete this particular story before its natural life cycle was over, but my theory is that she understood how much discourse it would cause and wanted to protect herself from the intrusive DM onslaught She wanted to protect herself.

Gomez has been open in the past about the negative impact social media has had on her mental health, and for a long time she left her Instagram to her own team.

Just last week, however, the star wrote, "Wait can you tell I'm back on Instagram ? " and posted a mirror selfie with the caption.
