Details of King Charles' Coronation Announced, Including Luxury Concert at Windsor Castle
Last year, an occasion for royal followers to celebrate (a platinum jubilee!) ), but there was also a period of deep mourning at the end of the year after the Queen died on September 8 at the age of 96. Now it's a new year, and plans are underway to celebrate again for 2023: full plans for Prince Charles' coronation were announced over the weekend, with a ceremony as well as lavish concerts and other events planned.
Buckingham Palace announced yesterday that the three-day concert to be held at Windsor Castle from May 6 to May 8 will be broadcast live on the BBC (reminiscent of last summer's platinum party at the Palace for the Jubilee, which, as the name suggests, was Buckingham Palace), and a number of "ceremonies, celebrations, and community events" are planned.
"Their Majesties the King and Queen hope that the coronation weekend will be an opportunity to spend time and celebrate with friends, family and communities across the United Kingdom and throughout the Kingdom and Commonwealth," the Palace continued. Their Majesties look forward to celebrating this occasion with their people throughout 2023."
Saturday, May 6
The weekend will kick off with a coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6. The celebration is "rooted in longstanding tradition and pomp, yet reflects the role of the monarch today and looks to the future." Unlike his mother's coronation, which lasted three hours and welcomed 8,000 guests, Prince Charles' coronation will last one hour and will be attended by about 2,000 people, according to People magazine. The king's coronation will also be "more religiously and culturally diverse" and some extravagant events will be eliminated.
"The king has recognized that the world has changed in the last 70 years and has trimmed much of his coronation," one official said.
After the service, the royal family will join the procession to Buckingham Palace and appear on the balcony.
Sunday, May 7
Following the success of their Platinum Jubilee Concert last June, the Royal Family apparently intends to recreate that magic at the Coronation Concert on Sunday, May 7, on the East Lawn at Windsor Castle. The show's lineup will be filled with "international music icons and contemporary stars," supported by a world-class orchestra and dancers. Volunteers from Prince Charles and Camilla's charity organization will also be in attendance, and free pair tickets will be available to the public through a public vote.
Also on Sunday, a "Coronation Big Lunch" will be held in keeping with the Jubilee. This "national act of celebration and friendship" encourages citizens to go out into their own communities: "From tea parties with neighbors to street parties, the Coronation Big Lunch is a great way to bring celebration to your neighborhood and get to know your community better," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
To conclude the weekend on Monday, May 8
[22] and to honor Prince Charles' years of public service, Big Help Out, a national initiative, will "spotlight the positive impact that volunteering has on communities across the country by spotlight". Organized by the Together Coalition, the Scouts, Royal Voluntary Service, and faith-based organizations across the UK, Big Help Out encourages communities to come together to volunteer.
According to Tatler magazine, Prince Charles, at 73, is the longest-serving heir in British history and will be the oldest monarch in history when he is crowned. His mother, by the way, was crowned in 1953 at the age of only 26.
