Prince Harry Says He Doesn't Want to Be a "Single Father" Like Prince Charles
Trigger warning: this article discusses suicide.
In a new interview with ITV's Tom Bradby, Prince Harry explained that he brought his family to the US after Princess Diana's death because he did not want to be a "single father" like his own father, King Charles.
Harry's wife Meghan Markle has previously admitted to being suicidal during her time as senior royalty, and the only solution the Duke and Duchess of Sussex found for their own mental health and the safety of their son Archie was eventually to leave England. (Their daughter Lilibet was born while they were already living in California.)
"One of the reasons we are here now is that we never want to be in that position," Harry told Bradby (via CNN).
"I never, ever want to be in that position. I don't want to repeat history. I don't want to be a single father. I don't want my children to have a life without a mother or a father."
Harry lost his mother Diana when he was only 12 years old.
In another part of the interview, he says of Charles, "Single parents, [he] wasn't made for that."
Nevertheless, the Duke of Sussex showed considerable sympathy for his father, who he believed had done his best to raise his brother William and himself, though often unsuccessfully.
The Duke also said that he had tried everything to reconcile with his father and brother, but they did not show the same willingness. Nonetheless, he still believes he can build bridges between them and, as he said, wants to get his family back together.
Prince Harry has given four television interviews to promote his memoir, Spare, which will be released on January 10 and is expected to contain many shocking revelations.
