Why Kitty Spencer didn't wear her heirloom tiara at her wedding.
When Lady Kitty Spencer, Princess Diana's niece and daughter of her only brother, Earl Charles Spencer, married Michael Lewis in July 2021, she wore a Dolce & Gabbana gown (designed by the fashion house for the wedding that lasted three days She was also able to wear the Spencer Tiara along with one of her five custom-made dresses. The Spencer tiara, of course, was popularized when Princess Diana wore it to her wedding to Prince Charles in July 1981.
However, the Mirror reported that Kitty chose not to wear the Spencer Tiara on her wedding day, citing "painful memories.
"Lady Kitty has always been very private and has never spoken about her choice not to wear a tiara," James Constantinou, founder of Prestige Pawnshop, told the Daily Express. Wearing a tiara is believed to bring back painful memories for Kitty. It can remind her of an aunt who died under tragic circumstances, or bring back memories of her own mother's marriage, which did not have a happy ending. (It is also worth noting that Charles and Diana's wedding, the most famous wedding where tiaras were worn, was not necessarily a happy marriage.)
Kitty had a lavish wedding in Rome, Italy, and Constantinou continues, "Lady Kitty Spencer is believed to have been influenced by many things on her wedding day." She wanted to combine her love of Italy with her English heritage, so she wore a garland of flowers in her hair."
At the time of the wedding, body language expert Judy James described Kitty as a confident young woman who was completely in charge of the big day.
"It's always nice to see a bride take complete and firm control of her wedding day and be determined to carry out her intentions from start to finish," James says. If Kitty hadn't already been inducted into the Bridal Hall of Fame, she must have nailed it with her body language, thanks to the two wingmen walking her down the aisle and the five ridiculously fabulous dresses. The frock change was nice, but Kitty seemed to have a mood board on how to wear it as well"
.
That confidence was present with or without the heirloom tiara.
