First half of "Harry & Meghan" is "the biggest documentary debut in Netflix history," says rep.
Whatever people's opinions of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (and people have plenty of those), there is no denying the success so far of the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan.
Almost a week after the first half of the film was released, it is still making headlines and dividing public opinion. But in order for royal fans to have an opinion that would be controversial in the first place, they would first have to actually see the document.
"The first half of 'Harry & Meghan' was the biggest documentary debut ever for @Netflix," tweeted royal author Omid Scobie. According to a rep, more than 28 million households watched 8.155 million hours (over four days), the highest number of any documentary in its first week of airing. It is currently the second largest English-language television series in the world.
This is not the first time the Sussexes have scored a royal smash hit. When Princess Meghan's podcast "Archetypes" was first released on Spotify in August, it immediately jumped to number one on the streaming platform's podcast chart, beating out Joe Rogan's highly controversial series.
"Meghan's debut podcast, #Archetypes, did what many have tried and failed to do: take the top spot from The Joe Rogan Experience on @Spotify's US podcast chart," Scobie tweeted at the time. He tweeted at the time. [The show is also #1 in Australia, Canada, and the UK.
Meanwhile, Harry and Meghan's 2021 Oprah interview drew 17.1 million viewers when it aired on CBS, which was not far behind Oprah's most-watched Michael Jackson interview, but according to the Los Angeles Times, Diane Sawyer's 2014 interview with Caitlyn Jenner beat it.
The second half of "Harry & Meghan" opens tomorrow, Thursday, December 15. I have a feeling it will be.
