Prince Harry claims he and Prince William were not consulted about the joint statement.
When the teaser for Netflix's Harry & Meghan Volume 2 was released this week, one quote in particular sent royal commentators into a frenzy.
"They were willing to lie to protect my brother," Prince Harry said in one clip. 'They were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.'
Now, with the release of the last three episodes today, it seems we know what the Duke of Sussex was trying to say. To hear Harry tell it, it is truly a sad story.
In episode 5 of the limited series, Harry said, "One of the reasons Megan and I are leaving is because William bullied us.
"Then after (one) meeting, when we got in the car, we were told about a joint statement that had been issued in my brother's name and mine, and we killed the story that he had bullied us out of the family."
The statement said: "Despite explicit denials, false articles speculating about the relationship between the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge were published in the British press today.
"For brothers who care deeply about issues surrounding mental health, the use of such inflammatory language is offensive and potentially harmful."
Prince Harry, however, insists that this was not a joint statement at all. Says he, "I couldn't believe it."
"Nobody had asked me to do it. No one had asked me for permission to put my name on a statement like that."
"I was not asked for permission to put my name on a statement like that," he says. [Within four hours, they were willing to lie to protect my brother, because for three years they never wanted to tell the truth to protect us."
Prince Harry was clearly deeply hurt by the public relations machinations that took place behind the scenes at the palace, and in episode 4 of the document, he implies that Prince William was complicit in these machinations.
"I have 30 years of experience looking behind the curtain and seeing how this system works and operates," Harry explains. [I mean, there are constant briefings about other members of the family, about favors, about inviting the press in. It's a dirty game. There are leaks, but we also plant stories." [If a communications team wants to erase a negative story about its principal, it will exchange or provide information about someone else's principal. So the offices end up working against each other."
"There's a strange understanding or acceptance that happens. And anytime you say, 'I didn't know this. This is not possible. Are you trying to tell me that I am condoning this? But what I'm asking is, did you do anything to stop it? And the answer was 'no.'"
The brothers, formerly known as Wales, had vowed never to take part in such games. Harry reveals, "William and I both saw what happened in our dad's office, and we vowed that we would never let something like that happen in our office."
But when the Cambridge and Sussex offices separated in 2019, the Duke of Sussex felt his brother did not honor that agreement.
"I would much rather be crushed by the press than go along with this game and deal-making business," he says.
"It was heartbreaking to see my brother's office copying what we both promised we would never do."
Historian Mok O'Keefe, who is active on Instagram and Tiktok as @GayAristo, told Marie Claire magazine, "Not only was the royal protocol broken, but the contract between the brothers was also broken. But I don't think it is useful for us to "shift the blame." Instead, we should reflect for a moment on how two very close brothers became estranged literally thousands of miles apart"
.
"That the monarchy, which constantly renews itself to remain relevant, has lost its opportunity, and that the children of the Sussex family can no longer play with their cousins.
"I am a monarchist. But this documentary is about the disintegration of the family and the loss of opportunity."
