Meghan Markle felt "embarrassed" after awkward first meeting with Prince William and Princess Kate: Body Language Expert

Meghan Markle often displays great confidence, but one scene in a new Netflix documentary about her and Prince Harry shows her embarrassment when she first met Prince William and Princess Kate.

It appears to be when she and Prince Harry were having the then-Cambridge couple over for dinner, and Meghan greeted them in torn jeans and bare feet and went over to give them a big California-style hug.

She recalled, "I've always been a hugger, so I didn't realize how shocking it really was to many Brits," implying that William and Catherine did not always reciprocate her loving welcome.

Here, body language expert Darren Stanton deciphers what happened during the exchange.

"Princess Meghan is very athletic, which means she likes to touch," Stanton told Marie Claire on behalf of Betfair Casino (open in new tab).

"But this is obviously not the case with many people in life.

"When she was talking about meeting Prince William and Kate Middleton for the first time, she obviously felt it was appropriate to hug them.

"From William and Kate's reaction, it was clear that they still needed to get to know her a little better before that."

However, Stanton does not believe that William and Kate are uncomfortable people. He says, "The past analysis I have done on Prince William and Kate shows that they are also athletic people, but like normal people, they can be guarded before they want to get to know and open up to someone."

Stanton also says that "they are not the kind of people that you would want to be around if they were not your friends.

Stanton added, "When Megan was talking about the moment, I noticed that her eyebrows rose and her face fell. This was a combination of feelings of embarrassment and shame. As she repeated the memory about the meeting, her unconscious was fighting off the same emotions as at the time."

Meeting in-laws is never easy, but when you add to that the fact that your partner's relatives are royalty, it must be really tricky.
