Prince Harry told a naïve Meghan Markle in the early days of their relationship to "stop smiling at the paparazzi."

We've all experienced the early days of a budding romance, and it's always hard not to smile.

The difference between our collectively blossoming relationship and that of Meghan Markle, who tied the knot with Prince Harry in 2016' We don't get chased by paparazzi, desperate to get a picture as the new girlfriend of the most attractive single man in the world.

Meghan Markle had a lot to learn about being a celebrity in 2016, as being followed by the paparazzi was not an everyday M.O., even though she was an actress on the hit TV show Suits. One of Harry's secrets, revealed Thursday in the first volume of their Netflix documentary "Harry & Meghan," is "not to smile at the paparazzi. It's a detail revealed in episode 2 of the series when Meghan reflects on how her life changed after her relationship with Harry was finally confirmed in late 2016, and how media attention became frightening while living and working in Toronto.

"I remember going to buy flowers and coming out of the flower shop and there were nine or ten pups standing in the street. They all blocked the car and said, "Hey, how are you, Megan?" And I was like, "Oh, thanks, stay warm, guys!" And I was like, "Oh, thank you, stay warm, guys!

The next day, Harry, who was an expert in this kind of media attention thanks to his mother Princess Diana's relentless pursuit of him before her death, said to Meghan, "You know what?" And I said, "I'm just trying to be pleasant. I don't know what to do. But the British media is saying you love it. But the British media says you love it.

Friend Lucy Fraser recalled that it was a shock for Meghan to accept her newfound fame. Meghan said at the time that she felt as if the entire British press had "descended on Toronto". Her Toronto home was "surrounded," she said, with photographers lurking and "waiting for me to do something."

"I was listening to all of this from thousands of miles away," Harry said.

"And I was totally helpless to do anything about it." (Harry's two serious girlfriends before Meghan, Chelsea Davey and Cressida Bonas, also received excessive media attention.)

The couple's relationship with Meghan was not the only one to be affected.

Megan was told by her Toronto neighbors that paparazzi would knock on her door looking for her, and that some of her neighbors even paid her to install a live streaming camera in her backyard.

"Suddenly, everything in my life seemed so insular. 'They pulled all my curtains and blinds. I was scared."

As Harry and Meghan's burgeoning relationship dominated the headlines, "I was told and written things that I had to go to her and ask," Harry said. That was the hardest part."

"It really accelerates the learning curve of the relationship," agreed Meghan.

In the first three parts of Harry & Meghan, viewers have seen the couple from their first meeting to the royal wedding in May 2018. The final three parts will debut on Netflix this coming Thursday.
