HBO's "House of Dragons" introduces viewers to a generation of aristocrats playing "Game of Thrones." The prequel follows a branch of the Targaryen dynasty and focuses on the looming succession battle following the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Constantine). The king nominates his only child, Princess Rainaila (Millie Alcock (open in new tab)), as his successor in the first broadcast, reversing centuries of precedent for female rulers, but then his sudden marriage to Lady Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey), the daughter of the king's hand (and former best friend of Rainaila) marriage gives her a chance to name a male heir.

The first season of "HotD" is divided into two timelines, one in which Lenaila and Alicent are young women, and one in which they are mothers, played by Emma Darcy and Olivia Cooke, with their own agendas about who should take the Iron Throne.
