HBO's "Game of Thrones" prequel "House of the Dragon" has finally arrived, welcoming fantasy fans to Westeros nearly two centuries before Daenerys Targaryen was born. Dany's Targaryen ancestors are at the height of their power and influence, and the only threat is the question of succession. When King Viserys I, against all sexist conventions, names his daughter Rainira as his successor, the stage is set for an all-out Targaryen civil war, with Rainira on one side and her friend-turned-enemy Alicent Hightower on the other.

The heart of the Dragon family lies with the rebellious crown princess and dragonrider Lenila. She is expected to nurture her heir rather than become his heir, but she is also a budding tactician with ambitions for the throne. When her father breaks centuries of tradition and names her heir to the throne, clashes erupt over the throne and a Targaryen civil war breaks out.

The first season of the prequel has a time slip, and the young Lenira is played by Australian actress Alcock. She has appeared in several Australian drama series and won the Australian Casting Guild's Rising Star Award in 2018.

The adult Raenira is played by Darcy, a London-born film and stage actor who uses non-binary and gender-neutral pronouns. She has previously appeared in the Prime Video action series Hanna, the British comedy/horror Truth Seekers, and the 2020 film Misbehaviour.

King Viserys was elected by the Grand Council of Harrenhal to succeed his grandfather Jayheerys (open in new tab). He has ruled in times of peace and at the height of Targaryen power, but with only one child and no male heir, his death is likely to throw that prosperous period into chaos.

Considine is a British actor and director. In the United States, he is best known for his roles as Simon Ross in The Bourne Ultimatum, Claude Bolton in the HBO miniseries The Outsiders, and Father John Hughes in Peaky Blinders season 3. He is also a member of a rock band called Riding the Low.

Viserys' brother Daemon was considered the heir to the throne at the beginning of the series, but his hostile personality and antics have left him with few allies at court. A capable warrior and dragonrider, he believes he can be a better ruler than his brother.

"House of the Dragon" is the latest of Smith's appearances in the popular TV series. After a stint as a stage actor, he rose to international fame when he played the 11th Doctor in the long-running sci-fi series Doctor Who. He then played Prince Philip in the first two seasons of Netflix's The Crown. He has also appeared in the films Terminator Genisys (with Thrones scion Emilia Clarke), Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Last Night in Soho, and Morbius.

Viserys' wife and Rainila's mother, Emma (who had a better role), is played by British actress Brooke, who trained at the National Youth Theatre and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She is best known for her roles as Elizabeth in the fourth season of Sherlock, Deidre Young in Prime Video's Good Omens, and Karen in the Apple TV+ series Trying.

Alicent is the daughter of King's Hand Otto Hightower and grew up in the Red Keep with most of the royal family, including her best friend Lenila. The girls are best friends at the start of the series, but the trailer hints that they will be at odds as adults (possibly due to the connection established between Alicent and Viserys).

A London-born actress and model, Carey made her stage debut at the age of nine, appearing in the British productions of Shrek the Musical and The Sound of Music. She then played Diana's child in 2017's Wonder Woman and Lara in 2018's Tomb Raider.

The post-time-jump Alicent was played by British actor Olivia Cooke, best known for her role as Emma DeCody in the "Psycho" prequel series "Bates Motel." She has also appeared in the films Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl, Ready Player One, Thoroughbreds, and The Sound of Metal.

Hightower serves as Hand of the Two Targaryen Kings, advising Viserys in the same manner as his grandfather, King Jayheeris. He is capable and wise, but has two hidden agendas: a hatred of daemons and a desire to increase the family's power (hence his sending his daughter Alicent to comfort the widowed king).

A Welsh actor, Ifans has probably appeared in at least one of your favorite movies or shows since the 1990s. Spike in Notting Hill, Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Mycroft: He played Mycroft Holmes in CBS' Elementary. He also recently reprised his 2012 role as Spider-Man villain Dr. Curt Connors, aka The Lizard, in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Lord Corliss, also known as the Sea Serpent, is the captain of Viserys, the head of the royal fleet, and a cousin by royal marriage. He is the head of House Valeryon, which is wealthier than the Lannisters, has the largest fleet of any of the houses, and has a Valyrian lineage as old as the Targaryens. Along with leading the second largest family, Corliss still resents the kingdom's rejection of his wife Rainis as queen several years ago.

A British actor of Barbadian descent, Toussaint has been a prolific actor since the 1990s, appearing in the film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the HBO Max miniseries It's A Sin, and the Prime Video series Fortitude and Small Axe He has appeared in Fun Fact: Before landing the lead role in "House of the Dragon," Toussaint auditioned for "Thrones" several times on the air.

King Viserys' cousin, Rhaenys, is a Targaryen princess and dragonrider. After the death of King Jayhaerys, she was a candidate for the throne and had a stronger claim than Viserys, but was passed over because she was female. She is now known as the "queen who never existed," although her son, Raynor, could be a serious contender for the throne after Viserys' death.

Best is a London-born film, television, and stage actor, trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, who has played Dr. Eleanor O'Hara in Showtime's Nurse Jackie, Wallis Simpson in the Oscar-winning film The King's Speech, Netflix's Fate: The Winx Saga, and as Principal Dowling in Netflix's The Winx Saga. He has also received two Tony Award nominations and a Drama Desk Award for his work on Broadway.

Sir Christon is the son of the Steward of Black Haven, a Dornish commoner. As the season progresses, he grows closer to young Lenira.

British actor Frankel studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before making his film debut in the 2019 film Last Christmas alongside Emilia Clarke from Thrones. the BBC miniseries The Serpent and She also appeared in the 2019 reboot of NYPD Blue.

Ser Westerling is one of the longest serving members of the Kingsguard, having enlisted during King Jayheeris' reign. He is also a sworn shield of young Lenira and is very loyal to House Targaryen. (His descendants, the Westerlings, are a minor house loyal to House Lannister and surrendered to Robb Stark in Season 2.)

McTavish is best known for playing the warrior Dougal MacKenzie in another popular fantasy film, STARZ's Outlander. The Scottish actor and writer has also appeared in the "Hobbit" film trilogy, AMC's "Preacher", and FOX's "Prison Break". He has also worked as a voice actor for video games, animated films, and movies.

Mysalia is a slave from Essos who became a prostitute in Westeros. She has a special romantic relationship with Daemon, so much so that he brings her with him when he escapes King's Landing at the end of the first episode.

Mizuno, a Japanese-English actress, worked as a high-fashion model and danced with several ballet companies before making her film debut alongside Oscar Isaac in the science fiction film Ex Machina. She is best known for her role as bride Araminta Lee in the film Crazy Rich Asians and has also appeared in La La Land, Netflix's Maniac, and FX's Devs.
