Prince Harry says Archie and Lili missed Princess Diana
A quarter century ago, the world lost the most famous woman on the planet, and two boys lost their beloved mothers; on August 31, 1997, Princess Diana was killed in a Paris car crash, while Prince Harry was only 12 at the time, just two weeks shy of his 13th birthday. Prince Harry, who will turn 38 on September 15 On Thursday, while playing polo in Aspen, Colorado, he took the stage to reflect on his late mother.
"Next week is the 25th anniversary of my mother's death, and she will never be forgotten. 'I want the day to be filled with memories of my mother's amazing work and her love for the way she did it. I want it to be a day to share my mother's spirit with my family and my children who missed her so much"
.
At the event, Harry paid tribute to the late Princess of Wales' legacy of public service. Harry founded Sentebale in 2006 with Prince Siso of Lesotho to help children and youth in South Africa affected by poverty, inequality, and HIV/AIDS.
In his speech, Harry said that he and Prince Siso founded Sentebale to honor their respective late mothers, noting that "Sentebale" means "forget-me-not" in Sesotho, the principal language of Lesotho. (Royal Trivia: The forget-me-not was also Princess Diana's favorite flower.)
Harry, who has a son Archie and daughter Lili with wife Meghan Markle, told Today's Hoda Kotb in April how open he and Meghan are to Archie (and perhaps Lili as they grow up) about their late grandmother Princess Diana.
"I'm not sure how much I'll be able to do.
"We talk about [my grandmother] a lot. But she says, 'This is my grandmother Diana. I have a picture of her in my house.'
In his documentary "The Me You Can't See," Harry revealed that he has a picture of Diana in Archie's nursery.
"I wish she had been there with Archie," he said in his May 2021 documentary." Apart from "Mom" (and "Dad"), one of the first words he said was "Grandma, Grandma Diana. She's the cutest. At the same time, it made me really sad that she should be here."
In an interview with Today, Harry spoke of his mother's "constant" presence and said he feels her presence "more than ever" since the couple moved to California in 2020.
"It's as if my mother has done her part for my brother [Prince William] and now she's helping me so much ...... My brother has his children and I have mine. The situation is obviously different, but I feel her presence almost every day. ...... She watches over us," he said.
