Kate Middleton's sassy college nickname caught Prince William's eye

This week we learned that the Queen's granddaughter, Lady Louise, daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, will be attending college at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

We have all heard the anecdote about the fashion show in 2002. Kate, a friend of William's at the time, wore a see-through slip dress at a charity fashion show that caught the eye of her future husband. However, according to the Mirror, the nicknames given to Kate by fellow schoolgirls also piqued William's interest.

"It may have been the cheeky nicknames given to her by her fellow students that caught the future king's eye," the Mirror wrote." That's because when she started college, she participated in Fresher's Week, a traditional event to welcome new students.

This is described in Katie Nichol's book, Kate: The Future Queen, in which Nichol describes Kate's "hectic week of partying, meeting "college parents" (the older students responsible for looking after new students), roaming the city, and settling into her student residence We had a hectic week before settling into our dormitory," she wrote.

Freshers is a slang term for first-year college students.

Nicole writes, "Kate soon found her way, and could often be found relaxing in the common room, curled up in an armchair, tea in hand, reading a newspaper article her father had mailed her somewhat movingly, or getting to know her fellow boarders.

By the end of Freshers' Week, Kate seemed to have made a big impression on her classmates, who began calling her "Beautiful Kate."

"She was more reserved than many other young women at first, but her natural beauty was evident," Nicole wrote.

"Tanned from a recent vacation in Barbados with her parents, fit from regular early morning runs and swims, and dressed in comfortable Hennes jeans, tight-fitting sweaters, and distinctive cowboy boots, she radiated outward freshness and inner confidence."

William, perhaps for obvious reasons, skipped Fresher's Week and arrived the following week. Perhaps it was the nickname given to her by her peers."

At their 2010 engagement press conference, when asked about the moment they met, William could not remember exactly and said, "You have to rack your brains." Kate, however, remembered everything - including, in her own opinion, not playing it cool.

"When I actually met you, I turned bright red and was so embarrassed to see you that I ran off at a run," she said. 'William wasn't there at first. He hadn't been there since Fresher's Week, so it took us a little while to get to know each other. But we became very close friends quite early on."

The "beautiful Kate" met in 2001 and finally married the prince 10 years later on April 29, 2011.
