The Queen has eaten this dish every day for the past 91 years.
It would be accurate to say that Her Majesty the Queen is a creature of habit. According to The List, the Queen is regular in her food choices and prefers to eat the same food every day. According to her former personal chef Darren McGrady, the Queen has eaten the same food every day since she was five years old (yes, she has been eating the same food for 91 years). Devoted is an understatement).
And according to McGrady, the Queen eats the same breakfast almost every day (Earl Grey tea and a bowl of Special K cereal), and on other days she chooses simple dishes like grilled chicken or grilled fish (along with gin cocktail and the occasional chocolate), but her lifelong faithful eater is the "jam penny" sandwich, she says.
According to Mac Grady, who worked for Her Majesty the Queen for 15 years, there are only three ingredients and she asks for this sandwich every day at teatime, no matter who she is dining with. All you need is bread, jam, and butter, he says, and if you really want to look like royalty, use strawberry jam.
"I make the jam with gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens at Balmoral Castle," he says on his YouTube channel. (Her Majesty the Queen is currently spending the summer at Balmoral Castle.)
As for why the sandwich is called a "penny," McGrady says it has to do with "the size of an old English one-cent coin."
The queen may be a monarch, but her tastes are simple and, as McGrady himself says, "the queen was never a foodie."
Somehow this simplicity makes us like her even more.
