Read More1/23 Update: Michelle Carter is scheduled to be released from prison today, January 23, 2020. She had been incarcerated since last February and was scheduled to serve 15 months. Less than 12 months later, however, Carter will be released early for good behavior, just a week after the Supreme Court refused to hear her appeal against her conviction. A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office (opens in new tab) says: "Ms. Carter was a model prisoner here at the Bristol County Correctional Facility. She participated in various programs, worked in the jail, was courteous to our staff and volunteers, got along well with other inmates, and we had no discipline issues with her."
Original Article HBO's new two-part true-crime documentary I Love You, Now Die, directed by Erin Lee Carr, aims to shed light on the tragic relationship between Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy III In 2017, Carter was convicted of her convicted of manslaughter for her role; in 2019, she served 15 months of her sentence.
Carter was 15 years old when she met Roy; the two Massachusetts high school students were on a family vacation in Florida when their paths crossed in February 2012. And when they parted ways, Carter and Roy maintained a primarily texting relationship, even though they lived only a few towns apart.

At first, the message was typical of teenage high school students. They shared favorite songs, asked about each other's day, and sent smiles about inside jokes. Eventually, however, Roy got Carter thinking about suicide.
Countless texts were exchanged, many of which concerned how Roy would carry out his suicide plan. During the ensuing investigation, thanks to excerpts of these conversations between the two, all eyes turned to Carter:
Carter was charged with manslaughter in February 2015, just seven months after Roy's suicide; in June 2017, she was found guilty of manslaughter and her sentence was reduced to 15 months She was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. However, according to NBC (opens in new tab), Carter's attorneys have spent the past two years trying to have her case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court while maintaining Michelle's freedom.
Earlier this year, the court ruled that Carter had been given enough free time; in February, the Massachusetts Supreme Court denied a defense motion to stay her 15-month sentence. Carter was taken to the Bristol County Jail and Correctional Facility in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where she began serving her sentence immediately.
