Simone Biles Condemns USA Gymnastics' Birthday Tribute

Olympic gymnast and gold medalist Simone Biles turned 23 on Saturday. But she received one birthday gift yesterday from USA Gymnastics. It prompted her to respond with a very direct message, referring to the Larry Nassar case (open in new tab), which has affected hundreds of gymnasts.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the most decorated gymnast of all time, @simonebiles!" the organization tweeted. 'We know you will continue to amaze us and make history.'

Biles retweeted the message along with her own thoughts: "How about you surprise me and do the right thing ... Do an independent investigation."

Although not explicitly saying so, Biles noted that USA Gymnastics has offered to distribute a $215 million settlement (opens in new tab) to 517 athletes who sued the organization over abuse by Nassar. In January 2018, more than 160 women gave their trial, gave victim testimony, and were sentenced to up to 175 years in prison (opens in new tab).

Biles has made it clear that a settlement is not enough and has asked USA Gymnastics for an independent investigation; in February, she tweeted a message similar to the one she tweeted on her birthday.

"At the airport. Heading to team camp, still want answers from USAG and USOPC." They want an independent investigation as do the survivors and myself. Anxiety is high. It's hard not to think about things I don't want to think about! 11]

Biles is currently preparing for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, which have yet to be cancelled or postponed (open in new tab) due to the coronavirus. This will be her second Olympics. She made her debut (open in new tab) on the Olympic stage in Rio in 2016.
