Read MorePrince Harry and Princess Meghan have arranged for money generated from their wedding broadcast (opens in new tab) to be used to feed hungry children during the coronavirus pandemic.
The couple pledged to donate just over £90,000 to the charity Feeding Britain, which will be used for programs throughout the UK. The funds, called a "godsend" by the organization's national director, Andrew Forshey, were generated from surplus profits from the BBC's Royal Wedding broadcast.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, who presided over the Sussex couple's May 2018 marriage, is chairman of Feeding Britain. Harry and Meghan told him they wanted to donate to the organization in a phone call made at a time when schools across the UK were closing their doors to most children.
A spokesman for Harry and Meghan said they were "delighted" that the money would be used for "such a wonderful cause."
At the time of Harry and Meghan's wedding, it had been agreed that any surplus profits from the BBC broadcast would be donated to a charity nominated by the couple. At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Harry and his wife were informed about this fund. The Sussexes thought it fitting that the money from their wedding be donated to a charity supported by the archbishop, who played an important role that day.
According to Forsey, the donation will help Feeding Britain maintain its programs until school resumes. The social and economic impact of the coronavirus "has impacted the entire Feeding Britain network. Poor families who were already struggling to access and purchase food are now even more at risk of hunger," he told T&C.
He added that the money, which is expected to arrive this week, will "keep breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or three square meals, on the tables of tens of thousands of children across our network."
Feeding Britain is working in 12 regions of the UK to pilot new approaches to solving hunger, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the charity has also formed new partnerships in London and Scotland to implement emergency food programs implemented, providing hot meals and food packages through home deliveries and collection points for those in need.
Harry and Meghan visited Feeding Britain's first civic supermarket at 7 Birkenhead (open in new tab) last January to see the charity's work firsthand.
"The magic they left in the city that day is carried on by this very generous donation," Forsey said.
He heard about the donation shortly after a second civic supermarket opened in Coventry. 'Some of the first families supported there were those whose children were sent home from school. ...... The children were starving because there were no free school meals," he said.
A spokesman for the Duke and Duchess said the couple were "thrilled" to hear of Feeding Britain's efforts to provide assistance during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
"The Duke and Duchess were able to speak with the Archbishop recently and were touched to hear all about the work Feeding Britain was doing to help people during Covid-19," the spokesman said.
"They have particularly fond memories of their visit to the Civic Supermarket in Birkenhead, especially about the generosity and compassion of the people who work there helping others. They are delighted that the funds will be donated to such a wonderful cause."
