Arberry, who was unarmed, was shot and killed after a struggle over the shotgun. Today, May 8, would have been his 26th birthday. [The former prosecutor assigned to the case (opens in new tab) claimed they acted in accordance with the Citizens Arrest Act and self-defense laws after Gregory told police he thought Arberry resembled a suspect in a string of break-ins in the area. Arberry's family denied claims that he was involved in a crime, but his sister, Jasmine Arberry, told CNN that she believes his death was a hate crime.
Georgia State Attorney Tom Durden said Tuesday, May 5, that the case will go to a grand jury. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Thursday, May 7, that Gregory and Travis McMichael were arrested and booked into the Glynn County Jail, CNN reported (opens in new tab). They are charged with murder and aggravated assault.
Jasmine Arberry told CNN, "It's been a long time. I feel like it was a long time. So this day was a turning point for me to get my brother's case back and to get justice for him."
She said.
Many celebrities have added their voices to the growing outcry over Arberry's murder and the lack of criminal charges filed against Gregory and Travis McMichael prior to their arrest on Thursday.
"Armo Arberry. Went out for a jog. Chased. Chased. Killed. Months later, his killer is free," Gabrielle Union wrote on Instagram, along with a photo of Arberry. 'We don't want to be seen as something worth begging, pleading, reasoning, crying, screaming for, or even breathing our last breaths over. If you need to be cajoled into empathy, you are not who you think you are. I do not want to doubt whether you see our humanity. We are worthy of peace, joy, grace, compassion, and all the protection we are afforded by our existence."
"We are literally chased every day/every time we step outside our comfortable homes!"
[14 LeBron James tweeted." I can't even go jogging!""We demand justice for Ahmoud because we deserve it," Tracy Ellis Ross wrote on Instagram. She added: "You may or may not already know his name. But please pay attention, everyone. This is what is happening in our country. This is still happening in our country. It is not just happening in Georgia. It is happening everywhere."
More celebrities took to social media to call for justice for Arbury, including Naomi Campbell, Ava DuVernay, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Viola Davis. Their posts include:
