Dakota Johnson calls Shia LaBeouf "the greatest actor of his generation."

Dakota Johnson graces the summer cover of Marie Claire. In the same issue, she talks about her particular taste in choosing projects. One of those projects is the 2019 film Peanut Butter Falcon (opens in new tab). When she was drawn to the film several years ago, she was in Italy, "in a place that felt very dark."

The drama follows a young man with Down syndrome (Zach Gottsagen) who runs away from a residential retirement home to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Along the way, he becomes unexpected friends with an outlaw (Shia LaBeouf), and Johnson becomes romantically involved with LaBeouf's character. Since then, LaBeouf and Johnson have respected each other's work.

"Shia may be the greatest actor of my generation, though I wouldn't say it to his face," Johnson jokes to the MC.

This is not the first time Johnson has spoken about his co-star; in January on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" (yes, that interview) (opens in new tab), DeGeneres asked him what he thought about LaBeouf's arrest for being drunk in public during filming.

"It was really sad and I wanted to protect him very much and ... I felt like it was a really scary and difficult journey that somebody goes through," Johnson said on the show. (Open in new tab) "And I felt really aware of that." She continued, " I don't condemn people for their mistakes, I want them to get over it."

In addition to discovering her admiration for LaBeouf during filming, she also found one of "the greatest loves of my life." It was not her boyfriend, Chris Martin.

"Zack Gottschagen has become one of the greatest lovers of my life," she told Marie Claire of her other Peanut Butter Falcon co-star. He completely changed my world."
