Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra: A Brief History

Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra: A Brief History

You won't be surprised to learn that Dennis Rodman (opens in new tab) is having a wild episode. Episode 3 of "The Last Dance" features 50 minutes of pure Rodman (though the basketball legend didn't start talking until the filmmakers gave him a Subway sandwich and chamomile tea (opens in new tab)). One of the topics that came up in that episode and elsewhere in the series was Rodman's relationship with his late-'90s playmate and Baywatch star Carmen Electra. [Electra and Rodman met in a Los Angeles nightclub and the basketball player was immediately hooked. 'We exchanged numbers and he called me over and over again,' Electra told the Chicago Sun-Times (opens in new tab). 'I never answered. One day I picked up the phone and he invited me to hang out with him. I went in."

"I went in.

Their relationship was a big part of episode 3, where we heard everything from a wild night in Vegas to when Michael Jordan (opens in new tab) made sure his teammates got to practice on time.

"I remember being at Dennis' house in Chicago, naked in the living room," Elektra (open in new tab) tells the Associated Press. 'He [Rodman] was very modest. He threw a mattress in front of the couch in the living room. That's where he always slept. I slept there, too. There was a knock at the door and Dennis jumped up. I don't know if he answered it naked or not. It was Michael Jordan. He said, 'I have to go to practice.'

The crazy stories don't stop there. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times (opens in new tab), Electra spills that Rodman had a "sweet romantic side" and liked to surprise her.

"One day, when the Bulls were off practicing, Dennis told me he had a surprise for me," she elaborated to the Los Angeles Times (opens in new tab). 'He blindfolded me and we would ride his motorcycle. When he took my blindfold off, we were standing in center court at the Bulls' practice field. It was crazy, like two kids in a candy store. We had sex all over the place in the physical therapy room and weight room while eating popsicles from the fridge. And of course, on the court. I honestly don't think I've ever seen him train that hard before." In other words, the most normal date ever?

They became infatuated with each other and, like many of our favorite celebrity couples (opens in new tab), got married in Las Vegas. On November 14, 1998, Rodman and Electra eloped at the Chapel of the Flowers, but filed for divorce nine days later They reconciled, but eventually filed for divorce nine days later. They reconciled, but eventually divorced in April 1999.

"It was such an honor to watch them play," Electra says of that final championship season.

"There are no words for those times. There will never be another era like that."

Today, despite having the same agent, the two do not speak often. After watching the documentary, Elektra says she was reminded of how special that era was. Yes, we had a blast and we had this wild love affair, but we also had a lot of hard times. There were a lot of hardships," she told the Associated Press (opens in new tab). 'No matter what, I always wish him well.'
