Prince William Says Poor Eyesight Helps Him Relieve Anxiety

Prince William's latest documentary on mental health will air in the UK tonight on BBC One. The documentary, titled "Soccer, Prince William and Our Mental Health," aims to combat the prejudices surrounding men's mental health by having Prince William speak to soccer players and fans across the UK.

In a preview video released by the BBC (opens in new tab), William discusses his own experiences with public speaking anxiety. He says, "One day, especially in certain speeches as an adult, I certainly get a little anxious."

William came up with an unusual solution to his anxiety before an important speech: not wearing contact lenses. 'As I got older my eyesight started to deteriorate a little bit, and when I was working I didn't wear contacts, so I couldn't see anybody's face when I was giving a speech,' he says. I could see enough to read a newspaper or something, but I couldn't actually see the whole room. It actually helps with my anxiety."

In the same documentary, William talks to former soccer player Marvin Soder about the trauma of losing his mother, Princess Diana (opens in new tab), at a young age and how that trauma resurfaced when he had children. Having a child is a life-changing moment," she said. 'When you go through something traumatic in your life ...... when my mother died when I was young, those emotions come back in leaps and bounds."
