Royal family decides Prince Andreou will not return to public life

The Times of London reports that the royal family has decided that Prince Andrew, who suspended his official duties in November 2019 following heavy criticism of his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, will not return to public life (opens in new tab). An inside source told the newspaper that the family has "no plans to review" Andrew's status, adding that he is now considered "detrimental" to the royal family.

In a September 2019 NBC interview, Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre said she was forced to have sex with Andrew (opens in new tab) when she was 17, which the royal family "emphatically denied." In a subsequent BBC interview (opens in new tab), Andrew said he had "no recollection" of meeting Roberts Giuffre, but said he had no regrets about his friendship with Epstein.

Shortly after the interview, Andrew said in a statement that he was "stepping down from public work for the foreseeable future" because his "former relationship with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major obstacle to (his) family's work."

According to the Times, Andrew will not resume public work. The paper reports that most of the charities Andrew had sponsored have already cut ties with him (opens in new tab), and military officials have asked Andrew to "fade out" of military appointments.

Furthermore, before the Queen's birthday celebration "Trooping the Colour" was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the royal family had decided that Andrew should not be allowed to attend. According to royal sources, Andrew is now considered a "failed flash."

In response to the Times article, Buckingham Palace said "nothing has changed" since Andrew's November statement.
