Read MoreAs protests against the murder of George Floyd (opens in new tab) and the longstanding treatment of black citizens in the U.S. continue to rock the nation, an eerily timely old video of Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has resurfaced This two minute video, recently re-posted by a fan account, shows Markle speaking candidly about her biracial experience while wearing a T-shirt that reads "I will not stand for racism" for the campaign "Erase the Hate." (Opens in new tab)
In the video, she says:" I hope that by the time I have children, people will be even more open-minded about how things are changing and that having a mixed world is what it's all about." Megan will become a mom in 2019 to her son Archie Harrison, who turned one this spring.
Watch the video here:
Speaking candidly to the camera, Markle says:
My name is Meghan Markle. It hits really personal for me. I am biracial and most people don't know what I am mixed with. So the slurs I've heard, the really offensive jokes, the names, etc., have really hit me hard. A few years ago I heard someone call my mother the n-word. So for me, not only am I personally affected by racism, but I'm seeing what's going on in this country and in the world, and it makes me hope that things will get better."
She also talked about what it was like to leave Los Angeles, where she returned earlier this year with Prince Harry and Archie:
Leaving LA (to work on "Suits" in Toronto) was going somewhere other than where I was from It was like leaving this bubble where I was used to everything and had been exposed to everything, except for the closed mind I experienced when When my grandfather moved his family from Cleveland to Los Angeles, they had to drive across the country and around the back to get food for the family, no matter what the location. I thought that was a far cry from what we had experienced in the past, those times.
As for her comments about the future, remember that this conversation took place eight years ago:
I'm really proud of both sides of my heritage and really proud of where I came from and where I'm going. But you know, I hope that by the time I have kids, people will be more open to how things are changing and that the mixed world is what it's all about. It certainly makes it more beautiful and more interesting.
The resurfaced video was released days after the Queen, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle's Commonwealth Trust tweeted (open in new tab) in support of the "Black Lives" movement. The trust, established to "support, fund, and connect young leaders who are striving to change the world," tweeted As a global community of young leaders, we stand together in pursuit of equity and better progress."
"Silence is not an option," the tweet continued, ending with the hashtag "#BlackLivesMatter."
