Prince Andrew's November 2019 interview with BBC Newsnight's Emily Maitlis may well be the end of his royal career. In the interview, which was branded a fiasco, Andrew talked about his friendship with Geoffrey Epstein (opens in new tab) and denied Epstein's accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre's claim that he was forced to have sex with the royal family but with a convicted sex offender. He said he did not regret the friendship because it provided a "beneficial" opportunity.

Shortly thereafter, he announced in an official statement that he was "stepping down from public service for the foreseeable future" because his "former association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a significant impediment to (his) family's work." Earlier this week, The Times of London reported (opens in new tab) that Andrew would not be returning to official duties, claiming that Lord York was now considered "detrimental" to the royal family.

The interview was subsequently nominated for a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) television award in the "Best News Coverage" category, according to a People report (opens in new tab). That's where Prince William comes in: he has been BAFTA president since February 2010.

So there is a disconnect between William and his uncle's disastrous interview, however, if the interview wins a trophy, the Duke of Cambridge is unlikely to be in attendance; as People points out, William and Kate Middleton frequently attend the BAFTA Film Awards attend, but have never been to the BAFTA Television Awards.
