Meghan Markle's Publicist Discusses Important Speech on Black Lives Matter

Meghan Markle's publicist spoke about the moving speech she gave at the graduation ceremony of the high school she once attended. In it, she condemned the police killings of George Floyd (opens in new tab), Breanna Taylor (opens in new tab), Philando Castile, Tamir Rice, Stephon Clark, and other blacks, and urged the new Immaculate Heart High School graduates to take action against anti-black racism.

"I didn't know what to say. I wanted to say the right thing, and I was so afraid that I wouldn't be able to say it or that I would be torn apart. George Floyd's life mattered, Breanna Taylor's life mattered (opens in new tab), Philando Castile's life mattered, Tamir Rice's life mattered, and so did many others whose names we knew or did not know. Stephon Clark, his life mattered."

According to royal correspondent Omid Scobie, a spokesman for the Duchess of Sussex (opens in new tab), she said, "What is happening in this country now over the murder of George Floyd, and countless other black Americans, and felt compelled to address directly what has been happening to Americans for years and generations"

"This is incredibly personal for Meghan, especially given everything she has been through," the spokesman continued (opens in new tab), indicating that Prince Harry shares his wife's stance. 'And as a couple, that is of course very important. They both feel it as much as we do."
