Funeral Services for George Floyd to be Held Tuesday in Houston

George Floyd (opens in new tab), the 46-year-old Minneapolis black man killed by white police officer Derek Shovin on May 25, will be laid to rest Tuesday at a funeral service in Houston at 11 a.m. Houston time (noon EST), according to CNN, It will be held at The Fountain of Praise Church. Rev. Mia K. Wright told CNN, "We celebrate a life that, like so many lives, had its ups and downs, but also a life that was connected to God and to all the people of the world because of the tragedy and trauma of his passing. And we want to celebrate going home. [Speakers at the funeral will include leaders of the civil rights movement, Wright said, who will share "a call for justice, a call for social reform."

Floyd's brother, Philonys Floyd, said many in the Third Ward area of Houston, where he grew up, adored him, especially after he won a sports scholarship to South Florida Community College. [Rodney Floyd, George Floyd's brother, said he had a "beautiful soul," CNN reported. Rodney said, "If he had been told he had to sacrifice his life to bring the world together, and knowing him, I know he would have done it."

Rodney said he is having a hard time accepting his brother's death. 'It's unreal, like every day I'm waiting for him to call me. I still call his phone number."
