Meghan Markle sends a heartfelt message to the Grenfell Community Kitchen

Sunday, June 14, was the third anniversary of the devastating Grenfell Tower disaster, in which 72 people, mostly working-class people of color, were killed when their apartment building in Kensington, west London, caught fire. After the disaster, women who had lost their homes began cooking at the Al Manar Muslim Cultural Heritage Center and eventually established the Hub Community Kitchen (opens in new tab) to prepare food for the displaced community.

Meghan Markle, a longtime supporter of the Hub Community Kitchen, has visited many times, and in April, after launching a new initiative to bring food to families amid the coronavirus blockade, members Leila Hejem, Sherine Marah, Halima Al-Hudafi, Oksana Sinitsina, and Jennifer Odonkor and spoke with Zoom (opens in new tab). She also wrote the foreword to the 2018 cookbook Together: Our Community Cookbook (opens in new tab), which raised over £500,000 for the kitchen. As reported by the Evening Standard (opens in new tab), on Sunday, the Duchess of Sussex sent a heartfelt audio message to the volunteers, calling them "an example of love in action."

"I think back to when I met you all and how you came together in the wake of what you experienced in our community," Princess Meghan said in the audio message. 'And what you are doing now is so inspirational. That's what the Hub is all about. ...... I know that hubb means love, but you are an example of love in action, and that is what you are about."

"I am so proud of you and so is Harry. We send you so much love from across the pond and are thinking of you today," Megan continued.

"I know it's a tough day, but it's also a day to reflect on how much you've accomplished in the last three years and how you continue to give back and be an example to those around you."
