Read MoreThere is good news and bad news for U.S.-based fans of "The Great British Baking Show" (opens in new tab) and charming British celebrities. The good news is that in the Great Celebrity Bake Off, the annual star-studded charity edition of the series, big names such as James McAvoy, Daisy Ridley, and Katherine Ryan (opens in new tab), to Stand Up to Cancer! to compete in a shortened version of the beloved baking contest to raise money for Stand Up to Cancer. The terrible, terrible, no good, very bad news is that not only will "The Great Celebrity Bake Off" not be added to Netflix, it will not be streaming anywhere outside of the UK. (Although, fortunately, thanks to the regularly updated social media pages for "The Great British Baking Show," you can still watch just a small portion of the entertaining five-episode series. It's worth it.
For the fourth year in a row, The Great British Baking Show has teamed up with Stand Up to Cancer to produce a celebrity version of this long-running baking series to raise money for charity. Each season will have five episodes, with four famous Britons competing in each episode. Past contestants include Aisling Beau, John Lithgow, Russell Brand, James Blunt, and Tan France.
The show follows the usual Great British Baking Show format, with three challenges: signature, technical, and showstopper, which results in one amateur baker being named Star Baker. This year, Paul Hollywood (opens in new tab) and Prue Reese will serve as judges, and Matt Lucas will be the sole host, as Noel Fielding (opens in new tab) was away on maternity leave at the time of filming.
Of the 2021 contestants, the most recognizable names to us across the pond are probably James McAvoy and Daisy Ridley. There will also be a total of 20 contestants, including comedian Katherine Ryan, Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall, BBC Radio 1 host Nick "Grimmy" Grimshaw, YouTuber KSI, singer Ann Marie, and Olympic athlete Dame Kelly Holmes.
Clips of their culinary adventures can be seen on the Great British Baking Show's Instagram and YouTube accounts. Enjoy a montage of the best moments from McAvoy's episodes, including, for example, an eerily accurate impression of Gandalf followed by an eerily accurate comparison of the clever wizard to Paul Hollywood.
Now, take a look at Ridley's perfectly imperfect toilet cake:
Yes, really. We are as shocked as you are. Channel 4, which airs the series in the UK, does not allow viewers outside the UK to use the streaming site, and for some reason these episodes have not been uploaded to Netflix along with the rest of The Great British Baking Show.
The best option is to find a way to use a VPN to make your computer think you are in the UK - a bit out of my pay grade, I believe you. Alternatively, you could pack up and move to the UK and sign up for a Channel 4 streaming account. Other viable options include finding a penpal in the UK who will join you on FaceTime for a "Great Celebrity Bake Off" viewing party, or keeping up to date with the series' social media feeds and using their posts to summarize each episode's events, or try to summarize the events yourself.
Finally, if you just can't resist the desire to watch celebrities compete in The Great British Baking Show with hilarious and adorable results, and rightfully so, there is a star-studded special available on Netflix in the US: Saoirse = Monica Jackson, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, Dylan Llewellyn, Siobhan McSweeney, and Nicolas Coughlan (opens in new tab).
As you can see, this is really fun stuff and may fill that "Great Celebrity Bake Off" hole in your heart.
