Explaining the Conclusion of "Who Killed Sarah?

"Who Killed Sara?" spoilers for Season 1 The first season of the Netflix series "Who Killed Sara?" aka "¿Quién mató a Sara." thrilled as Alex Guzman (Manolo Cardona) investigates the death of his sister Sara (Simena Ramadrid) It was a thrilling turn of events (opens in new tab). Because season one ended with more questions than answers about Sarah's death: what secrets was Sarah hiding in her new diary? Who was the skeleton that Alex dug up? Why is Cesar still not in jail? Can any one of the Lazcano family members get out of this with their love life intact?" Let's unravel the twists and turns, flashbacks and montages of the finale.

First, some background: Sarah is vacationing with her brother, her boyfriend's family, and the rich Lazcano family at their lakeside home when she is killed in a parasailing accident. The police discover that Sara's death was a murder, and the patriarch, Cesar Lazcano (Ginés García Millán), convinces Alex to take the blame. After being wrongfully imprisoned for Sara's death and spending 18 years in prison, Alex follows the Lazcano family soon after his release and vows revenge against Cesar and his son, Rodolfo, Sara's old lover. However, Alex soon learns that Rodolfo is not responsible for Sara's death. Thus begins Alex's twisting and turning investigation to find out who killed Sara, aided by his new girlfriend, Elisa (Carolina Miranda), the youngest daughter of Lazcano.

Most of the finale is a flashback to the details of the lake trip and the hours before Sarah's death. It begins when Sara sees a video of a man beating a casino prostitute, Flor Sanchez, and runs out of Cesar's right-hand man Sergio's office with the tape. We learn that Sara is afraid of César and Sergio. But we also learn that there is another strong suspect in Sara's death.

In the flashback timeline, Mariana learns from her minion Elroy that Sara is pregnant with her husband Cesar's child. She takes Sara on a mountain hike, where she pretends to think that her son Rodolfo is the father of Sara's baby. She tells Sara that she agrees with the pregnancy and supports her. But she also almost pushes Sara off a cliff and encourages Sara to have fun when she can, especially with the family's new parasailing challenge. Later, Mariana orders Elroy to cut the parachute harness and blackmails him with knowledge of his past crimes (and some twisted seduction).

The rest of the flashback unfolds as we have already seen: Sara, Alex, Rodolfo, and Chema go out to the lake, Elroy keeps the boys away from parasailing, and Sara goes up with the broken harness and falls into the lake. There is also a scene where Mariana pretends to call the hospital, speaks into a dial tone, and washes off the evidence from the boat. But before we can declare the case closed, we see Elroy admit that he "couldn't do it." In addition to this, the fact that we do not actually see Elroy cutting the harness leads us to believe that he did not go through with it. Unfortunately, we do not know if he did indeed cut the harness, since the current timeline appears to show Mariana killing him in the hospital.

To make a long story short, we will not know who killed Sarah by the end of season one. More credible suspects have been identified, and other suspects such as Rodolfo and Chema have been crossed off the list, but Alex has not yet completed his investigation. Instead of a guilty verdict, a new development in the mystery of Sarah's death propels the show into Season 2.

In the final minutes of Season 1, Alex finds Sarah's second diary on the wall of her childhood home. This is because Alex had been using Sarah's diary as a lead during the investigation. The new diary contains irregular scribbles and drawings, and a page that says "I want to die". "After reading the diary, Alex calls his girlfriend Eliza and tells her that they did everything wrong. He also recognizes the place described in the new diary. When he gets there, he finds a shallow grave and a skeleton with a bullet through the skull. A flashback shows that Cesar shot the skeleton.

Cesar Lazcano has been set up as the main antagonist of the series since the first episode, and although he is not revealed in the finale as the killer of Sara, his many other crimes are well known. Cesar is a powerful businessman who owns a casino and assumes many other businesses. Much time is spent on casinos in this series. It is the place where Alex is wrongfully imprisoned and where he pulls some of his stunts to let the public know that Cesar is probably involved in Sarah's death as well.

Over the course of the show, we learn that Cesar has an illegal brothel in the basement of the casino for VIP clients. He brings his grandson Bruno there and has him lose his virginity to one of the prostitutes.

Trigger warning: murder, sexual violence. Later, we learn that Cesar recruited the prostitutes to his brothel, then stole their passports and blackmailed them to continue working for him. She also learns that several prostitutes were beaten and killed and that there is a snuff film of it. Sara sees the snuff film of Flor Sanchez just before he was killed. The identity of the man in the video is unknown, but the fact that Sara knows about the prostitutes plays into Cesar's motive. Cesar pairs Bruno with one of the prostitutes, Imara, and after Bruno tries to help her, she disappears. Her body was found in the finale, presumably murdered by César.

César did not go to jail in the finale, but the public's view of him changed as Alex gradually revealed his secret. There is a scene in which Cesar opens fire on a crowd of protesters around his building. Even if he was not Sarah's killer, it is safe to assume that Cesar will go to jail at some point in the coming season.

Throughout the series, Alex receives a puzzling clue from someone with the alias Diana the Huntress. She informs him that his initial hunch that Rodolfo killed Sara was wrong and urges him to destroy Cesar's reputation.

In the finale, we learn that Diana Huntress is really Sara's old friend Marifer. She appears to be a side character who joined Alex on another weekend at the beach, but it turns out that Sarah had confided in Marifer about the snuff film she found in Cesar's office and had given her one for safekeeping. We also learn that Malifer had called Sarah for help the morning she and Alex had left for their infamous weekend at the lake, but Sarah had ignored her and gone to the lake.

There is also a flashback of Sarah angrily tearing the room apart after Marifer tells Alex in the present that their friendship "didn't work out." As more of Sara's past unravels in Season 2, expect more details to be revealed about Marifer, including where she was when Sara died.

Throughout Season 1, the lives of the Lazcano children were turned upside down by the revelation of family secrets. In the finale, each of them is torn from their father Cesar in a different way, and their love lives are also upended. Elisa, the youngest child who helped Alex in his investigation, tells Cesar that she is in love with him and knows that Cesar is a murderer; Rodolfo, still mourning Sara's death 18 years later, learns that his wife Sofia was sleeping with Cesar and is now pregnant. During the fight, Rodolfo reveals that he had a vasectomy after Sara's death. After the fight, Rodolfo leaves, which is the last we see of the two, and there is no official announcement as to whether their marriage is over.

Chema, who is trying to have a baby with her partner Lorenzo, has not recovered from a disastrous dinner party where she told her family about the baby and her parents rejected her. In the final episode, the embryo is implanted in the womb of Chema's childhood friend and surrogate, Clara. However, Clara's ex-boyfriend follows Lorenzo to his office after the insemination and threatens Lorenzo. Lorenzo says he wants to move to Atlanta and raise the baby there, and Chema is angry that she was not consulted. Clara's behavior, such as peeping on Chema and Lorenzo having sex and slashing Lorenzo's tires, also suggests that she may want Chema all to herself.

In retrospect, "Who Killed Sara?" definitely left us with more questions than answers, and hopefully May 19 will bring some closure to these unresolved issues.
