Was there really a Beyonce scene in "Selena: The Series"?

Part 2 of the Netflix show "Selena: The Series" (opens in new tab), which chronicles the life of legendary Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, was just released on May 4, but viewers are already The Ramblings. Part 2 of the series (opens in a new tab) focuses on the biggest event in Selena's career and how she dealt with her rise to fame. At the beginning of Part 2, she was already a superstar in her home state of Texas. A small but monumental example of Selena's star power is illustrated in that brief scene when a young female fan is starstruck when she passes Selena in a shopping mall. The young fan's name is "Beyonce Knowles."

This scene, a chance meeting between a current superstar and a future superstar, could have been written for the show to highlight just one example of Selena's legacy. After all, Beyoncé has spoken of her admiration for Selena in interviews, and both were born and raised in Southeast Texas. Was this encounter made up for the show, or did it actually happen?

In the scene, two black girls and their mother are at an outdoor shopping mall. The girls were heading to a frozen yogurt store when the mother tells them to slow down and tells the older daughter to hold her sister's hand. The older daughter sees Serena and stops walking, and the mother is puzzled and asks, "Who are you looking at? Who is that? The girl just says "Serena" in awe and the mother, still confused, says, "Who is Serena?" I ask. The girl, still staring at Selena coming toward them, replies, "She's a famous singer, be quiet." The mother replies, "You are a singer too. The mother replies, "I'm not a singer, I'm a singer. (I loved this moment. My parents have done this too.)

As she walks past, Selena waves and says "Hi" to her family. The girl responds wistfully, "Hi." Beyonce Knowles, if you want to be famous too, you better learn not to be afraid of people." Beyonce is still staring at Selena, who looks back at Beyonce and smiles.

This scene only lasts one minute, but it is a very touching moment in Selena and Beyonce's history. Furthermore, even without Beyoncé's revelation, it is truly wonderful to see how much Selena was loved before her untimely death at the age of 23. The fact that the family was Beyoncé, Solange, and Tina elevates this moment from sentimental to epic.

That's right. The scene was based on their actual meeting at the Galleria Mall in Houston, Texas. Beyoncé spoke about her encounter with Selena in an interview with the channel MTV Tres. 'I didn't talk much to Selena because I wasn't a celebrity.'

Beyoncé also called Selena a "legend" and talked about how Selena inspired her as a musician. She said, "Growing up in Texas, hearing her songs on the radio and listening to her albums, even if I didn't really understand what she was singing, I think it helped me pronounce it in the studio. She was very talented. Even if she didn't know me, I'm so glad she gave me that opportunity."

The show does not specify how old Beyoncé was when she appeared on the show, but she and Selena were born 10 years apart, so if Selena is 22, for example, Beyoncé would have met her when she was 12. In 2007, she released the album B'Day Deluxe Edition, Beyoncé said that one of her childhood friends introduced her to Selena's album. 'I grew up in Texas, and one of my best friends from there is Mexican. When I was growing up, she introduced me to Selena's album and I listened to it all the time."

Beyoncé told People en Español that Selena was familiar to her because she is from Texas and she always heard of the singer. She also said the heart and rhythm of Latin music and its "drums and spiciness" remind her of her Creole roots.

The young Beyoncé is played by actress and singer Giovanna Bush, whose figure and voice bear a striking resemblance to Queen Bey's childhood videos. Bush is a Los Angeles native who has appeared primarily in short films and on the Disney Channel show Just Roll With It. Bush shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the set of "Selena: The Series" on his Instagram last December; in a May 4 post (opens in new tab), he wrote, "When you get to play icon @beyonce on Legend @selenaqofficial's show. Queen Bey, I wonder if I did you justice."
