The sexual tension between Ross and Rachel was real.

"Friends" fans have been eagerly awaiting the cast reunion special (open in new tab) for over a year now (17 years to be exact) to hear the behind-the-scenes secrets and to see if the chemistry among the stars is still the same. But there is one fact that fans will be most shocked and excited about: it wasn't just the characters Ross and Rachel who were intensely unrequited in the early seasons!

At the end of the nostalgia fest, reunion host James Corden asks what he calls "a cheeky question." They were all so young and attractive, Corden says, "I can't imagine not having had an off-screen romance ...... " he says. An awkward pause followed, with Aniston and Schwimmer making knowing eye contact. David?" Aniston seems to be checking to see if it's okay to reveal their decades-old secret.

Schwimmer says he had a "big crush on Jen" in the first season. However, unlike his alter ego Ross, who had to wait an entire year with unrequited love, Aniston says that unrequited love "paid off." Unfortunately, Schwimmer was not her lobster. It was "like two ships going back and forth, one of them was always in a relationship and never crossed the line. Matt LeBlanc (Joey) interjected that it was "bullshit" - after all, they are comedians, they have to get a laugh - but Aniston dismissed the rumor. "To be honest, I remember saying to David, 'I'd be very disappointed if the first time you and I kissed was on national television'"

.

Later, Schwimmer and Aniston recall hugging together whenever they had downtime during filming. Says Aniston, "We spooned and fell asleep on the couch." Could they get any cuter?" (For an adorable behind-the-scenes look, we suggest watching the reunion.) Apparently, Schwimmer and Aniston thought they were good at hiding their feelings. Ha! said Matthew Perry (Chandler), and Courteney Cox (Monica) said, "We definitely knew: 'We sure knew. (Says Matthew Perry (Chandler).

Schwimmer seems at least a little heartbroken that it was an "untenable, untenable situation," but Cox notes that it probably made their characters' storylines and performances better. He said, "Because if it hadn't worked out that way, it probably wouldn't have been as great as it was.

As always, Monica is right. That iconic scene in the coffee shop (Season 2, Episode 7, "What Ross Found") is Ross and Rachel and Schwimmer and Aniston's actual first kiss. Says Aniston, " We just put all of our admiration and love for each other into Ross and Rachel."
