Read MoreIn HBO's 2020 hit The Undoing (opens in new tab), Hugh Grant stars opposite Nicole Kidman in a murder mystery with a twist. In this tale of a high-functioning dysfunctional marriage (opens in new tab) (written by David E. Kelley, who also directed "Big Little Lies," the shocker of Kidman's last show foray into this very specific genre), it's natural to wonder about the actual marriages of the stars. Incidentally, Kidman has been married to Keith Urban for nearly 15 years, during which time Grant's love life was a bit less stable, but finally settled down to try his hand at married life in 2018. Here is some information about Grant's love life, including information about his wife Anna Eberstein.
Anna Eberstein, 41, is a Swedish native and co-founder of the London-based Scandinavian sock company Ace Slippers; according to the Ace Slippers website (opens in new tab), she is "bringing the traditional Swedish slipper sock with a more edgier style to the traditional Swedish slipper sock," and founded the company with her cousin in 2014.
Before launching her own business, Eberstein earned a master's degree in economics from Uppsala University in Sweden; according to information People (opens in new tab) gathered from her now-defunct LinkedIn page, she later worked for ESPN as a marketing and sales She worked as a promotions producer and directed corporate marketing campaigns as a freelance creative producer and director.
The notoriously private Grant has withheld most of the details of her relationship with Eberstein, but their history goes back at least to early 2012, when Eberstein gave birth to their first child together (and second for Grant), a son named John. Only a few months later, in December 2012, Grant had another son, Felix, with Tinglan Hong, who is also the mother of Grant's first child, a daughter, Tabitha, born in September 2011.
News of Grant and Eberstein's relationship did not break until early 2014, when several news outlets discovered that Grant had been added to Eberstein's son's birth certificate sometime in 2013 (opens in new tab). By then, however, the two had separated, but Grant told a Swedish newspaper (opens in new tab) in September 2014 that Eberstein and their two children live near him in London. We are very good friends and she is a very good mother," he said of Eberstein at the time."
Grant and Eberstein gave birth to their second child, a daughter, in December 2015 and have been together ever since, but rekindled their romance shortly thereafter; just months before getting married in a low-key, public ceremony on May 25, 2018, they had their third child (recorded at home for those keeping track, Grant's fifth). In an unexpected turn of events, the birth of the couple's third child was announced by Elizabeth Hurley, who dated Grant for over a decade in the late 80s and 90s (opens in new tab). She accidentally leaked the news on a March 2018 episode of Watch What Happens Live.
The actor has been part of many high-profile romances throughout his decades in the spotlight, but it wasn't until 2018, when he turned 57, that the "eternal bachelor" finally made his marriage move. He began hinting that he was about to end his long bachelorhood shortly after getting back together with Eberstein: in a 2016 conversation with Howard Stern (opens in new tab), he talked about changing his mind about marriage, saying, "If you're exactly the right person, your best friend If you're married, you get to see the wonderful side of it, and it's cozy and nice," he continued, "I think there's something unromantic about marriage.
It wasn't long before he posed the question to Eberstein: in a 2019 interview, he admitted that his earlier belief that he did not want a wife or children was "obviously wrong" and that he had "put it off for decades."
Grant also recently responded openly to rumors about why he married Eberstein: in June 2021, he shared an image on Twitter from a Google search that claimed "Hugh Grant married Anna Eberstein for her passport." He added, "I did no such thing. I married her because I love her. (And when asked if he spent time Googling himself and his wife, he revealed that a friend sent him a screenshot (opens in new tab))
It is clear that Grant and Eberstein are in a playful relationship. a November 2020 interview with Seth Meyers, Grant teased that his wife doesn't actually like any of his most famous romantic comedies, including "Noting Hill" and "Love Actually." My wife is the man of the house. She likes violent movies and gangster movies while I sit around watching "Roman Holiday" or "The Sound of Music" or whatever. So she didn't like the romance movies I made in the past. But now she's starting to get a taste [for my work]."
He added that while his wife enjoyed The Undoing, she preferred the other actors in the series to him. Grant said, in a droll manner, "She's in love with the husband of the murdered woman played by Ismael Cruz Cordova, and she's very much in love with the policeman played by Edgar Ramirez."
