Read MoreThe highly anticipated Hulu series "Nine Perfect Strangers" (opens in new tab) has just premiered, and its stellar cast (opens in new tab) has already won me over. The show, the latest collaboration between David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies) and Nicole Kidman, tells the story of an ultra-luxury wellness resort run by Russian guru Masha (Kidman), where nine strangers come to the resort to heal their emotional struggles, Marcia's unorthodox ways lead the guests to question what it means to be healthy.
In addition to Hollywood stars such as Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Bobby Cannavale, and Luke Evans, the cast of "Nine Perfect Strangers" also features up-and-coming actors who are about to break out. Samara Weaving gives an outstanding performance as Jessica, an aspiring social media influencer who wants to strengthen her marriage to her husband Ben. Weaving is familiar to horror fans, but everyone will be raving about this Australian actress in no time. Here is everything we know about this up-and-coming star.
Weaving, 29, was born in the southern Australian town of Adelaide. Her childhood was spent in Singapore, Fiji, Indonesia, and other Asian countries. Her family includes fellow actors. Her uncle is "Lord of the Rings" and "Transformers" actor Hugo Weaving.
Weaving began acting at an early age, and her parents put her in classes to help her overcome her shyness. She told Harper's BAZAAR (opens in new tab) that she decided to pursue acting seriously after watching "Pirates of the Caribbean" at age 12." I was exported from this world. I was full of curiosity and wanted to be a part of what just happened to me. I wanted to know how to get invited to the party."
Following a long lineage of successful Australians in the U.S., Weaving got her big break on the soap opera Home and Away, where she was cast at age 17 and played teenager Indy Walker from 2009 to 2013. Other notable alumni of Home and Away include Chris Hemsworth, Naomi Watts, and Heath Ledger.
After leaving Home and Away, Weaving began to pursue roles in the United States. He is best known for starring in Nine Perfect Strangers and other cult-favorite horror films, including the lead role in the 2017 Netflix film The Babysitter, followed by 2019's Ready or Not (a must-see), in which he plays a spouse whose demonic rituals She played a bride who is pursued by the family of her Weaving also won a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the cast of 2018's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
For her role in Nine Perfect Strangers, Weaving researched Instagram influencers and even saw influencers in person at an Australian coffee shop. She told W Magazine (opens in new tab) that playing the role of an aspiring influencer helped her rethink society's sometimes misogynistic judgment of influencers. 'It's really hard to be an influencer. It's really hard to be an influencer. You have to be a real businesswoman to be successful in the influencer world. You have to break down the patriarchal and very clichéd resentment in our culture," she said.
Weaving also told WWD (opens in new tab) that she hopes Jessica's story of suffering from body dysmorphia will encourage viewers not to make immediate decisions." I even hear it now. I'll be in the car with a friend and someone will say, 'Oh, she's too much excitement.' I'm just like, 'Who cares?' I remember the tabloids saying, 'You're ruining your face. This is somebody's life. If it makes them feel better, it's none of your business."
Weaving is also part of a meme highlighting women who look remarkably similar, including Margot Robbie, Jamie Pressley, and Emma McKee in Sex Education. Weaving told the Sydney Morning Herald (opens in new tab) in 2019 that she had once been mistaken for Robbie on the street and a stranger told her he liked her in The Wolf of Wall Street. The Aussie actresses turned out to be close friends. 'Margs and I hang out a lot,' she told SMH. 'My fiancée [American screenwriter and producer Jimmy Warden] and her husband [British director Tom Ackerley] are really close. She's a wonderful, inspiring woman."
Like many people around the world, Weaving is a fan of the international reality show Love Island. She told W Magazine (open in new tab) that she, Robbie, and their group of friends all watch the show, and Robbie even hosted a "Love Island" themed party this summer. A group of Australians, Americans, and Brits here in L.A. are all obsessed with "Love Island,"" Robbie said. I think it's a fascinating human study and a fun dress-up theme," she said. She also described the dress code for the party as "skimpy bikinis and lots of fake tan."
"Nine Perfect Strangers" is Weaving's first major role. She also co-stars with Brad Pitt in Damian Chazelle's new film Babylon and plays former Playboy bunny Holly Madison in Down the Rabbit Hole, a mini-series based on Madison's memoir. Weaving told Harper's BAZAAR about the role, "It's going to blow up people's image of Playboy and Hugh Hefner."
