Princess Diana's film "Spencer": everything we know

Princess Diana and her tragic story have recently experienced a resurgence in popular discourse, and rightly so: in November 2020, the fourth season of "The Crown" premiered with the young Princess Diana (played to perfection by Emma Colin (open in new tab)) and the anguish she faced soon after joining the British royal family. introduced the anguish she faced. This portrayal led to an explosion of podcasts and thought-provoking articles that delved deeply into the doomed Princess Diana and forced us all to reconsider our complicity in the horrific treatment of women, especially young famous women, by the press and society at large. Most recently, after Meghan Markle confided to Oprah Winfrey that the unreasonable expectations from the royal family and the ruthless media scrutiny had severely affected her mental health (opens in new tab), realizing how similar the Duchess' experience was to that of Princess Diana (opens in new tab) It was impossible not to notice, and Prince Harry himself pointed out the similarities (opens in new tab).

Next up, the biopic "Spencer," titled after Princess Diana's maiden name and set for release this fall, delves even deeper into one of the most difficult moments in Princess Diana's life. Here's everything we know so far about the film, from its star-studded cast to the plot of the fiasco.

The lead role is played by Kristen Stewart, who in the first official snapshot released in February is completely unrecognizable in a black mesh hat, black ribbon blouse, and bold red jacket, just like in the early 90s.

"'Spencer' is an emotional dive into the imagination of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life," Stewart said in a statement about the film earlier this year. It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, beginning with her name, Spencer." Diana's struggle to hold on to what the name Spencer means to her is an arduous effort to come back to herself."

The film is also a "tribute to Diana's life,"

and "a reflection on her own life,"

Other cast members include Timothy Spall, known for his role as Peter Pettigrew in "Harry Potter," as Prince Philip, and Sean Harris, famous for his roles in "Mission: Impossible" and "The King: Mission: Impossible" and " Sean Harris, famous for his role in "The King," will play Prince Charles, and Sally Hawkins, best known for her Oscar-nominated lead role in "The Shape of Water," will play an unnamed role.

In terms of staff, director Pablo LarraĆn, known for biopics such as "Jackie" and "Neruda," and screenwriter Steven Knight, who wrote "Lockdown" and "Serenity" and is the creator of "Peaky Blinders," have film very well.

"Spenser" is about a three-day weekend Diana spent at the Queen's Sandringham estate after she decides to divorce Charles. Because it deals with such heavy subject matter, Stewart describes the film (opens in new tab) as a very "meditative" project.

"It's a really poetic, really internalized imagining of probably the heaviest three days of her time before she did the awkward thing of leaving the royal family," the actress told Entertainment Tonight in February." It's like a really internalized story, so I just read everything I could and then kind of forgot about it."

To briefly review, by the early 1990s, Diana and Charles had experienced a decade of sustained marital strife, despite having welcomed two sons along the way. The film appears to be set at the end of 1991, as this is when a turning point in their marriage occurred: up to that point, they had put on a stoic face to the press and kept all the details of their bitter relationship under wraps, but in 1992, after a series of bombshells and few leaks about their affair, the Queen officially granted permission for the couple to separate. (They were only granted a divorce a few years later, in 1996. )

A press release from Neon Pictures in late August provides more background on what the film will delve into: "Princess Diana and Prince Charles' marriage has long since gone cold. Rumors of infidelity and divorce abound, but peace is guaranteed at the Christmas festivities at the Queen's Sandringham estate. Eat, drink, shoot, and hunt. Diana knows the game. This year, however, things are very different.

The film will be released on November 5, 2021.

On August 26, Neon Pictures released the film's first charming teaser trailer, a one-minute clip showing the Sandringham crew preparing the mansion before the royal family visits for the vacations. Princess Diana, played by Kristen Stewart, is shown running wild, hurt, and seeking solace in the person of Sally Hawkins, played by Kristen Stewart, to the tune of a haunting song. In the last few seconds of the trailer, Hawkins tells Stewart, "They know everything," to which Stewart replies, in Diana's trademark breathy accent, "They don't know." [Photos from the shoot (open in new tab) show the two even more indistinguishable, with Stewart in a side-parted blonde lob that looks exactly like Princess Diana, and wearing several 90s outfits.

On August 25, Neon Pictures also released the first poster for the film. This poster is a dramatic image of Princess Diana, played by Stewart, in a stunningly ornate white ball gown, shedding tears. The social media post was embellished with the appropriate yet poignant words, "All fairy tales end."
