Sex Education" Season 4: Everything We Know

If you're like us, you've probably already watched all eight episodes of Netflix's "Sex Education" season 3 (open in new tab). The story is about the Moondale students' revolt against their authoritarian new vice principal, played by Jemima Kirk of "Girls. Fans of the show have been devouring the new season, which returns after a 19-month break, and are already clamoring for more episodes (and that cliffhanger ending (open in new tab) doesn't help).

Luckily, Netflix doesn't make us wait long for renewals; Netflix announced at last weekend's "Tudum" fan event that "Sex Education" will return as Season 4. The announcement came just a week after the premiere of Season 3, making it the fastest renewal for a Netflix original series in some time. To begin the celebration and speculation of what will happen next to Otis and his gang, here's what we know so far about Season 4.

Netflix revealed the show's return in a "Moordale News" alert posted Saturday. The clip pairs a secondary school logo with a bulletin-style statement: "Breaking news: sex education, back for Season 4."

As for when the show will return, that depends on whether production gets back on track. Season 2 ended in January 2020, exactly one year after it first aired, although Season 3 was delayed for several months. Therefore, if the show is renewed as soon as possible, we could see "Sex Education" Season 4 as early as the fall of 2022.

"Sex Education" Season 3 Spoilers. In the Season 3 finale, all of the characters' fates were left up in the air now that the Moondale Secondary has closed due to lack of funding. The show's core couple is also in flux. Maeve (opens in new tab) and Otis finally confessed to each other, but soon after, Maeve left to study in the US. Eric broke up with Adam because he wanted to pursue his own identity without his just-breaked-up boyfriend. Things went well with Jacob for a season, but Jean learned that he was not the father of her baby.

With so many cliffhangers, the show can do a lot with story development. There could be time jumps, like the fast-forward to the beginning of the semester in Season 3, but Season 4 could also explore the time Maeve and Otis have been apart and how that distance will test the couple (there could even be a scene where Maeve is in America). Of course, the couple could reunite in Moondale for the summer, or they could reunite elsewhere and begin immediately.

In terms of the time constraints of this teen show, the former students of Moondale entered their final year of secondary school in season 3, and the finale suggested that there was still time before graduation. This means that we will either follow the kids as they split off to different schools or take up their last summer before college. It may be a certain sex therapist who is bringing the distant children together.

Asa Butterfield as Otis, Nukuchi Gatwa as Eric, Amy Lou Wood as Amy, Connor Swindells as Adam, Kedar Williams-Sterling as Jackson, Patricia Allison as Ora, Lily It's safe to say that most of the main cast favorites return, including Tanya Reynolds, Mimi Keane as Ruby (opens in new tab), Dua Salley as Cal (opens in new tab), and Alistair Petrie as Mr. Groff (opens in new tab). (opens in new tab), Alistair Petrie as Mr. Groff, and Gillian Anderson as Jean Milburn.

One star whose return may be up in the air is Emma McKee as Maeve, who, in an interview with Hunger (opens in new tab), revealed that she has mixed feelings about continuing to play a teenager on the show because she is approaching her late 20s in real life She revealed.

"It's complicated for me. Sex Education is so memorable as a concept and as a show, and the cast is amazing. I genuinely care about them so much and I've made lifelong friends. We kind of grew up together. But the bittersweet part is that you can't be 17 and have your whole life ahead of you. "

Maeve is such an important character that if she decides not to return for a full season, we expect McKee to at least fit in a cameo. However, McKee said in a new interview with ELLE (opens in new tab) that she is thinking about what Maeve's storyline will be in season 4, and it seems likely that she will return.

Butterfield told Cosmopolitan UK (opens in new tab) before the premiere that she doesn't know what's next for the show, but she is definitely willing to do a fourth season. 'Because this show is so much fun. At the same time, we've been doing it for three years now, so it would be nice to say goodbye to these characters. ...... You'll have to wait and see."

He also opened up about the next possibility, letting his imagination run wild. I want a Christmas movie. Sex education is the theme. I don't know if there's more to it than that. I wish I could tell you more, but I genuinely don't know."

He added, "A spin-off would be good, but it would have to be well thought out and really unique, not just to do a spin-off."

Butterfield and Ncuti Gatwa also shared their hopes for the upcoming season with ELLE (open in new tab), and Butterfield hopes the show will expand Otis and Maeve's relationship.

"I want them to see the bigger picture. I want them to explore themselves and focus more on their relationship with themselves or their platonic relationships with friends and family."

He also wished for more scenes between him and his real-life friend Gatwa. Otis and Eric are most themselves when they are together. I wish there were more scenes with us."

Gatwa added that. [Showrunner Laurie Nunn asked, 'What do you want? More scenes with Otis.'"

McKee also told ELLE (open in new tab) her hopes for Maeve in a possible fourth season, saying she hopes the teen can come out of her shell a bit more in America.

"I'm excited for her to make new friends, to open up a little more, to be exposed to different cultures and different worlds. Because she has only ever lived in a tiny little bubble. I wonder how she got out of that bubble."

She continued, "It's really nice to see her actually living her dream. What it does to people and how it changes you. And all the anxiety that comes with being away from home. If it comes to fruition, it will be amazing to witness."

Casting director Lauren Evans told Metro.co.uk (opens in new tab) in May that she hopes the show will continue for many seasons "as long as people want it and the stories to be told are there." She also noted that creator Laurie Nunn has previously said that she does not expect viewers to continue watching the show past the end of the school year.

"Like Laurie said before, Laurie doesn't want to keep going on and put these people through college and technical school and keep them through middle age," Evans said, adding hopefully, "But we'll see."
