Is Crockett Island in "Midnight Mass" real?

I don't know about you, but I breathed a sigh of relief when I learned that Crockett Island, the extremely creepy former fishing town featured in Netflix's Midnight Mass, is not a real place. This small island, full of so called miracles and dead animals, is the real protagonist of "Midnight Mass," and like his previous film, "The Curse of Bly Manor" (opens in a new tab), director Mike Flanagan knows how to make a scene. [Not only is it physically difficult to leave the island, but the island's inhabitants are also mentally incapable of leaving. Protagonists Erin Green (Kate Siegel) and Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford) are drawn back to the island as adults, despite knowing how limited life on the island is. In addition to a failing economy, Bev Bloody Keane (Samantha Sloyan) and a series of eerie events.

Despite its dark, beaten-down atmosphere, Crockett Island was actually filmed in idyllic Garry Point Park in British Columbia, Canada. According to a local report in the Richmond News (opens in new tab): "A large area of the park was fenced off for a new Netflix series titled 'Midnight Mass.'" The Richmond News quotes one observer tweeting: "They have beach cottages and fake power lines inside and tons of fishing village stuff." You can also check out behind-the-scenes shots of the set taken by another observer (opens in new tab).

The same park was the setting for several episodes of Once Upon a Time and an episode of The CW's Nancy Drew series. A quick search on Getty Images reveals that it looks like a lot of fun:

However, it's not such a fun place to be at Midnight Mass. But that may be because of the lingering horror of the dead cat scene.

The "short answer" no one is quite sure: according to Den of Geek, (open in new tab) "All we have to rely on is basically wave motion. And in terms of atmosphere, Crockett Island feels somewhat New England." On Crockett Island, everyone always looks cold, wrapped up in sweaters, long skirts and jackets. So you would think Crockett Island is in the Northeast, not off the coast of Florida. (Besides, where else is there more unlike "Midnight Mass" than Florida?)

Den of Geek notes that Flanagan shared a photo of himself as a young alter boy on Governors Island (in New York) (open in new tab) and wrote, "This story is profound to me." According to the Wall Street Journal, Flanagan may have envisioned an island like Governors Island, which has fewer than 1,000 residents (opens in new tab) and can only be reached by ferry. Also, Governors Island, like the rest of New York, would be quite cold around Easter. But visiting Governors Island now, one cannot expect the atmosphere of Crockett Island: in recent years, Governors Island has become a tourist center, attracting nearly one million visitors (open in new tab) each year.

Still, if you want to visit "Crockett Island" minus the fishing sets and fake power lines (long gone, I think), you can visit British Columbia's Garry Point Park. Just go to ...... If you go there and something strange happens, don't blame me.
