5 Female Musicians You Should Know

It's 2021: we know that women play instruments and make great music doing so, and we don't need an annual "Women in Music" article to tell us that. But why, then, do we need to highlight the contributions that women and non-binary people make to the music industry? According to a 2019 study of gender inclusivity in mainstream music, there were still 4.8 male artists for every woman in the top 100 charting songs each year from 2012 to 2018. That's not because women aren't making music, of course: the industry that produces the songs, sells them, and sends them to the stores that play them tends to favor men. In the same sample, only 12.3% of the songwriters credited for these songs were women. The time for change is now.

PRS Guitars is supporting female musicians around the world by highlighting them, providing them with gorgeous instruments, and giving them a platform to share their art with a larger audience. Here are five female musicians you should know right now:

Three sisters from Monterrey, Mexico, made headlines when they were still young playing Metallica covers. Yeah, that's cool. The Warning (open in new tab) turned their viral fame into a real kick-ass music career, becoming actual friends with Metallica and now opening for the Foo Fighters, with a third album on the way. And guitarist Danny Villaral, at just 21 years old, has practically become a rock veteran.

Gabriela "Guitar Gabby" Logan is an Atlanta-born musician, writer, and environmental lawyer who graduated from the University of Vermont Law School after studying environmental and music law. Wanting to help more people enter the music industry, she also founded TxLips Band, LLC, an international touring collective of black women and non-binary musicians. Sophie Burrell is a 21-year-old British rock prodigy who has been playing guitar since childhood. She is a super metal, that ... Yes, by virtuosity, she has amassed nearly 300,000 followers on Instagram (opens in new tab). Seriously, this girl plays thrash riffs better than thrash. Check out her single "Tranquility (opens in new tab)" and you'll see.

The Beaches formed in 2013, but three of its members, sisters Jordan Miller, Kylie Miller, and Eliza Enman-McDaniel, grew up playing music together. Named after their native Toronto neighborhood, the group plays stomping, snarling rock reminiscent of the 1970s. The Beaches are currently on tour (open in new tab).

Bassists are often underrated as heroes of rock bands, but it's hard to overlook the brilliance of Lauren "LT" Tanail. She grew up playing music with her family and became the bassist in Beyonce's badass, all-female touring band. Yes, that Beyonce, LT is also a member of Normani, Jasmine Sullivan, and Fantasia, and plays with her sisters in a band called the GG's. Her Instagram is here (opens in new tab).
