Read MoreNetflix's hit show "Made" is one of the best dramas of the year. Alex (Margaret Quarrie) (opens in new tab) has a beautiful, haunting location that is fitting for the story of a young mother building a new life for her 2-year-old daughter, Maddie, away from her abusive ex-lover. Based on Stephanie Rand's memoir "Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive" (opens in new tab), the show is a fictionalized account set in Rand's hometown in Washington state.
Throughout the show, Alex travels between shelters and low-income housing in Port Hampstead (modeled after the real-life town of Port Townsend) and to affluent neighborhoods like Fisher Island to clean clients' homes. Although the show's portrayal is true to the Pacific Northwest region, it was actually filmed on Vancouver Island, Canada, with some areas in the Victoria region used instead of Washington state. The production team was able to find fictional locations for the show, including the gorgeous Fisher Island.
Vancouver Island is a popular filming location for movies such as the X-Men movies and The Twilight Saga (with maid Billy Burke playing Bella's father), according to Condé Nast Traveler (opens in new tab). Creator Molly Smith Metzler told local newspaper The Times Colonist (opens in new tab) that the show was shot entirely on location in the Victoria region, using 160 different locations ranging from budget supermarkets to oceanfront mansions
.
"There were no sets; we shot on location. That's how it came across. Victoria is like a character on this show," Metzler said.
For fans who want to walk in Alex's shoes, there are several options in nearby towns. Downtown Victoria has a number of local restaurants where scenes were filmed, including the Guild on Wharf Street, which was the stand-in for Sean's bar, the Swan. Cadboro Bay, part of the Saanich neighborhood, is home to Regina's oceanfront mansion in the Ten Mile Point neighborhood and Cadboro Gyro Park, where Alex and Maddie played with Nate and his son. (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also stayed in North Saanich in January 2020. If you want to imagine royalty in a mansion like Regina's.)
As for the many ferry scenes, the scene where Alex and Maddie sleep at the terminal was filmed at the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal in the town of Sydney on the northern tip of Victoria Island. The luxurious ocean view cabin where Alex held Maddie's birthday party in episode 6 is available with a gazebo on AirBnb (open in new tab).
The wealthy town seems to be a fictional substitute for the wealthy community near Alex's hometown, with both Regina's mansion and the daycare Alex has chosen for Maddie. There is a real-life Fisher Island in Washington State, but it is not on the show's location near Seattle, but further south along the Columbia River.
The Maid's two main settings, Port Hampstead and Fisher Island, illustrate the real income disparity between wealthy and impoverished towns in the Pacific Northwest and mirror similar situations across the country. Alex depends on Fisher Island as a place for several cleaning clients and also as the best day care center. The way Alex builds a life for himself and Maddie without the necessary resources subtly elevates the overall theme of the program.
