Only Murderers in the Building" Season 2: Everything We Know

"Only Murders in the Building" spoilers ahead. Who would have thought that a show with a bassoon vacuum cleaner at the center of its plot could capture the hearts and minds of so many? "Only Murders in the Building" has the stellar Selena Gomez, (open in new tab) Martin Short, and Steve Martin The unexpected chemistry of the cast and the plot, which satirizes a culture obsessed with true crime, surprised and delighted fans. There was also a beautiful apartment; the 10-episode first season ended in mid-October, revealing who killed Tim Cono and a few other secrets, but there are still plenty of murders in the building.

Here's everything we know about the future of Hulu's murder mystery series.

So. Season 1 ended with a massive cliffhanger, so it would have been cruel if Hulu didn't offer a new chapter of this hit show. On top of that, it was Hulu's most-watched comedy ever. Thankfully, Hulu announced on Twitter (opens in new tab) a month before Season 1 came to an end that "Only Murders" would return for a second season.

The season one finale raised as many questions as it answered. Tim Cono's killer was finally identified, but it was not the DiMase family as initially suspected. Instead, it was Charles' girlfriend, Arconia bassoonist Jean (Amy Ryan). The last part of this episode, however, introduces an entirely new crime. Oliver (Short), Mabel (Gomez), and Charles (Martin) are arrested for this crime.

Show creator John Hoffman told Entertainment Weekly that the plan for the finale was always to kill Bunny. He explained, "She was central to the characters in the story, if that was the victim, which would make a bad impression at the end." 'So the trio around her dead body, with a knitting needle in her chest, points at all of them in a way that is both threatening and intriguing. And it was always my intention from the time I first pitched the show to Hulu that the last line of my pitch would be, "At the end of the season, our investigative trio will be the prime suspects in a new murder case and the potential subject of a new podcast by their own mentor to find out"

.

Season 2 will likely clear this iconic detective trio of false accusations and find out who really killed Bunny. Will Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) lead the investigation or just podcast their misfortune? And like Cinda's podcast, will Season 2 be called "Only Murderers in the Building"?

Hoffman told EW that Season 2 will go in a "bigger direction" and that the key to unlocking the plot is figuring out why Bunny might have been in Mabel's apartment in the first place.

Speaking to Deadline, Hoffman also teased that fans will learn more about Arconia's history in the second season (opens in new tab)." It certainly has some secrets and that is another area we are interested in exploring," he said. 'In Arconia, everything gets very complicated. We will learn more about its history in Season 2." Hoffman also suggested, when speaking to "Elle," that Mabel may find herself more hard hit by Bunny's death than Oliver and Charles. But it would allow the program to expand on Mabel's story more." They are all in the hot seat. And Maybelle will be in the spotlight even more. The opportunities that may arise from that are intriguing to us going into season two," he said. Mabel's life gets a little bigger in Season 2."

Fans will be overjoyed to hear that Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short will return for Season 2. Also, guest star Tina Fey will likely play a bigger role in Season 2, as it was announced in the Season 1 finale that her character Cinda Canning would be making a true crime podcast about our beloved true crime podcaster.

Hoffman almost confirmed that Bunny (Jane Houdyshell) will also appear in Season 2: "As for being a victim on this show, just ask Julian Schich, who played Tim Cono, another great victim in Season 1. Even if you are a victim, you may still appear on the show."

Most importantly, Arkonia (Bernode in real life) will continue to be a major player in Season 2. Hoffman told EW that "Arconia should remain squared away and be portrayed at its center." He also teased that while Season 2 may not be the last of Only Murder in the Building, future seasons may go beyond the beautiful Manhattan apartment complex." It will be very exciting when you consider all the ways this piece will move, grow, and potentially not always be within its walls," he added.

Hoffman was more coy when talking about whether Sting would return (open in new tab), but he told Deadline (open in new tab) that Jane Lynch would likely return as Charles' former stunt double, Saz.

As for Oscar, Hoffman suggested that much remains to be done in his and Mabel's burgeoning but "complicated" relationship. The show creator said, "There's a certain dream of them being together and recognizing who they are, but I think there's work to be done to understand exactly who they are and what they're destined to be together."

Hoffman even forewarned Elle that even though Teddy Dimas and Theo are "in a boatload of trouble," we may see them again in season 2.

It was also announced in early December that supermodel and actress Cara Delevingne has been cast as a series regular for the upcoming second season. She will play Alice, "a sophisticated art world insider who becomes embroiled in a mystery," Variety reported. While Season 1 dealt primarily with jewel thieves (murders and podcasters), Season 2's crimes may revolve around the world of wealthy art curators.

A premiere date has not yet been confirmed, although rumors place it in mid-2022. Hoffman told Elle that filming is expected to begin again in November 2021.

"I've been working with the writers for the last few months," Hoffman said. 'With this show, you have to build the mystery backwards and forwards and twist your way to the solution. So first you have to know everything at the end, you have to hide things, and you have to twist your way to the solution. That's what we've done and now we're speeding through the script.
